Notes: So, I went to a steampunk convention over the weekend and it got me wondering how well Kostya would translate to a steampunk-type universe...this is the result. I think I like it.

He had gone through his father's diaries despite the man's wish for them to be burned upon his death. It was something that Kostya shouldn't have done, but he had inherited his father's insatiable curiosity as well as his things. That was how he had come across the notes that had recorded his father's experiments with the spirit world.

Most of the alchemists that Kostya knew mostly regarded the spirit world as a bit of a fairy-tale, the domain of those who were less scientifically oriented and more superstitious than today's alchemists, but judging from his father's notes...the spirit world was real. His father had kept detailed notes on how he had contacted the spirits who dwelt in this other world and his experiences with them. The young man found that he could not put down the notes and craved to know these things for himself.

So, instead of consigning his father's diaries to the fireplace like he had promised, Kostya kept them. At first, he kept them because he thought that it would've been a shame to lose information like that, even if he never intended to use them, but the longer he had them, the more he wanted to use the formulas and spells that his father wrote down.

This is how Kostya found himself in his lab, talking to a smooth talking demon with gold eyes and long black hair with a ever present smirk on his face.

"I knew your father. In fact, this is exactly how he ended up dead," said the demon when he appeared before the young man.

"Were you the one who killed him, then?" said Kostya, who was careful not to show the fear he was feeling on his face.

The demon laughed uproariously and said, "Well, yes and no. The thing that most people don't tell you about dealing with our kind is that we don't take too kindly to our deals being broken. That can lead to a person dying or worse." He grinned broadly at Kostya. "And you seem to be as foolish as your father...especially considering you don't have the proper protection."

"What do you mean--" Kostya never finished what he had to say. He suddenly found that he could not talk and he stared at the demon who was holding a ball of light in his hand.

"Too bad they don't teach people these days how to control the spirits they summon...well, it's too bad for you, boy." The demon smirked. "Instead of me working for you, I think it's you who should work for me, don't you think? Your father was an interesting one, but I think you would work much better for my purposes. It's been a long time since I've had any power in this world and I think that working through you would help me get that back."

Kostya swore at himself mentally and thought that he should've listened to his father.

Whoops. Yes, Kostya, you should've listened to your father. Still, a great setup on your part!
