Notes: The title is from a Tori Amos album and I thought it would fit perfectly for this. This piece was inspired by a similar event that happened to me around the same age.
She knew she shouldn't have stayed over at Abuela's house.
Abuela had woken her up early this morning and had fixed her favorite breakfast. Mari hadn't thought it suspicious at all. Abuela always did things like that.
She should have figured it out when Abuela said she wanted to go out. Abuela only got dressed up when she was going to chapel.
And to chapel they indeed go.
Mari now found herself slumped down in a pew, combing her thick curls with her hands and trying to avoid Father Bolivar's eyes. He was on one of his rants today.
“The sin is not the feeling,” Father Bolivar said pausing for effect. “The sin is completed when acted upon.”
Mari sighed. All Father Bolivar ever talked about was sin. She was starting to think he was abnormally attracted to it.
“It is sickening what is happening to the world,” Father Bolivar continued. “I've heard that some churches are accepting these abominations. This is the wrong course of action. It is not in God's plan.”
Mari frowned at the priest. How the hell did he know what was in God's plan? Did he text God on the regular?
He went on, but Mari tuned out. She glanced at her Abuela. She was watching Father Bolivar, but she was frowning slightly.
Mari sighed and pulled at the frayed lace of her dress. She couldn't wait to get out of here.
