Sorell remembered being little--his earliest memories--and Mamma petting him and spoiling him, treating him almost like a little doll, and that he was happy then and didn't see the shadows lurking underneath.
He thought Mamma got sort of bored of him when he wasn't a cute little toddler anymore.
He was four, when he found out that his daddy was a mystery, and that Mamma got angry whenever anyone asked.
But he was six before he started daydreaming about if his daddy knew who he was and was some day going to take him and he'd be happy and loved like before Mamma lost interest in him.
One time, he asked Aunt Keta if she knew who his daddy was, and Aunt Keta got a very strange look on her face and said she didn't know, only Sorell was pretty sure she was lying.
He tried asking Uncle Mellir after that--Uncle Mellir was good about sharing secrets, 'specially when he'd had too much to drink--but Uncle Mellir just laughed.
Sorell started thinking, because nobody wanted to tell him, and there were those weird phone calls Mamma used to make to Uncle Kellom, that maybe there was some horrible secret about who Daddy was.
Then he found pictures, from when Uncle Kellom was his age, and they looked like him.
Maybe he just looked like Uncle Kellom because he was his nephew and that happened sometimes--he was pretty sure that's what Gramma and Grandpa would say.
But when he asked Aunt Keta about his daddy again, with a name this time, she got very sad and changed the subject, and that's when he knew.
He stopped dreaming about rescue then, and started wishing for escape.

Good job.

Yeah. :/ Especially since he'd built up his father in his head as someone who'd save him from Mamma, and then...yeah.

My heartstrings have been pulled. You got so much wondering and longing into such neat, little packages! Thank you for posting this.
