Characters: Simon Gilboa (here David Greenberg), Ruth

Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always.
David wasn't sure when he realized he needed to spend the rest of his life with Ruth. It might have been the first time she stayed over at his place, which of course turned out to be one of the nights he had nightmares, and she hadn't woken up when he did, but about twenty minutes later, when he was in a hot shower trying to wash that fear away. And she didn't say anything, just touched his hand briefly, and having someone there--having her there--somehow made it a little more bearable.
Or it might have been something shallower--the night they decided to go on a more formal date than they usually did--seeing an opera, and then drinks at a classy bar after, and the way seeing her in an evening gown took his breath away.
Or maybe it wasn't any single event or reason--it was all of them, solid and shallow, wrapped up in the package that was her, and somehow, gradually, life without her became something impossible.
He didn't make a grand gesture of it, because that wasn't the way he was--shy, a bit, or maybe just afraid--but he found a ring that suited them--a tiny, single solitaire diamond in a white gold setting, simple and understated and beautiful. He set the box, open, in the drawer she had in his apartment, and waited, and hoped.
When she came out wearing nothing but the ring and a smile as big as the world, the reasons didn't matter, only her answer, and the perfect joy she brought him.
