“What’s in your hand?”

Jehann was holding fast to something. He kept opening his mouth to speak, but he closed it again.

“I have something for you.”

Marie smiled. “You didn’t have to get me anything.”

Jehann stepped closer to her. He took a deep breath and opened his hand.

A small golden ring sat there. It was unadorned.

“A ring?”

“I’d like for you to wear it,” Jehann said holding the ring out to her.

Marie stepped back slightly. “I don’t know if I can.”

“I’m not asking you...” he paused. “I’d like to think of it as a token.”

“A token?” Marie repeated.

“That maybe...one day if it’d please you, I’ll offer for you,” he said finally.

Marie stared at the ring. She so wanted to take it, to slip it on her finger, to promise to be his. But she knew she couldn’t. She was a royal and royals didn’t choose their own partners. No their parents chose them. She knew that. He knew that. Still it would be nice to pretend.

“I’d like to wear your ring,” Marie said.

Jehann smiled.

“But I can’t,” she said with her head down. “I am not in control of my own person.”

Jehann was silent.

“But I thank you.”

“I’d like for you to keep the ring,” Jehann said barely audible.

“I can’t,” she started again.

“You don’t have to wear it,” he said taking her hands in her. He put the ring in her hand before covering it with his own.

“Just keep it and when you look at it, think of me.”

Marie smiled. “I always think of you.”

“And I of you.”

Marie leaned toward him, but then stepped back when she heard footsteps coming towards them.

“She may be looking for me,” Marie said.

Jehann nodded. She turned to go, but looked back at him.

They smiled at each other before parting.

This is very realistic, and sort of painful for all that.

Poor Marie. She's so clearly warring between what is expected of her and what she wants...she's going with what's expected for now, but how long can that last without her becoming completely miserable?
