They'd found the butcher--or at least a man who closely resembled him--faster than expected, in a bar with some of his crew. A Captain, and high-ranked, too, based on what one of the other inspectors said.
But that was the Grand Duke's problem, not Deshell's. For now, he just focused on getting Selmid through this.
He nodded, and a light shone on the man's face.
Selmid whimpered and froze up, silent. But that was enough. Deshell signalled, and the light went out.
He hugged the boy briefly, then drew him away, to try and calm him before beginning the interrogation.

I love this AU, too. Writing the interrogation's going to be a bitch, though.
Selmid gets adopted by Deshell in...I think every AU, except possibly the In SPACE AU (and there it may just be that Fesha finds Selmid first, and it happens longer after the witnessed murder). Because I said so.
