Poem: "0 to 1"
Name:
ysabetwordsmith
Title: "0 to 1"
Colors: Vellum #2 Lacuna
Supplies and Styles: None.
Word Count: 158
Rating: G
Warnings: No standard warnings apply.
I need an author tag.
The following poem belongs to my series An Army of One: The Autistic Secession in Space. This is sociological science fiction about neurovariant people forming a culture of their own in the space between two galactic arms.
"0 to 1"
In the Lacuna,
home is not a physical space,
but space itself,
the emptiness that contains wholeness.
It is not a place, but people;
not a site, but cipherspace;
not a foundation, but a feeling.
It is not something that can be articulated
but that's all right: everyone is used to it.
Of course they get homesick,
sometimes, for the Galactic Arms --
the little curl of Orion-Cygnus around Sol
and the outward sweep of Carina-Sagittarius,
the grandest adventure of humankind.
Who wouldn't get homesick
for where they came from,
once in a while?
But it's not where they're going.
The secessionists have discovered
that the Lacuna
only seems to be empty,
its dusty silence filled with meaning
like bodies that speak a different language.
They are learning,
slowly but surely,
to love and not abhor the vacuum,
to fill emptiness with what matters most to them,
to think themselves consciously from
0 to 1.

Would you like a story tag as well? If so, what should it be? It needs to be forty characters or less, counting spaces and "story:" (exclusive of quote marks).
Thank you!
I appreciate that. Didn't realize "vellum" wasn't already active since it was on the original list post. That's the only color I'm currently working, though.

Well ... how many of those are you willing to make? I have several large projects, like Schrodinger's Heroes and Torn World, but a whole bunch of poetic series. Right now, the ones I'd be posting are:
story: army of one
story: torn world
story: one god's story
story: monster house

We make color tags as they're first used; that way, we don't have unused tags floating about. If, when you start a new color, you can't find it when you tag your post, just leave a note at the top or bottom of your post (outside the cut), and one of us will add it.
I've added all your tags. If, for some reason, you can't use them, also leave a note about that, and we'll double-check that it's added and accessible.

Thank you!
I'm happy to hear that! There are a bunch more poems already in the series. I was really amused to see "Lacuna" as a prompt since that's the name of their territory.
>> I'm curious, is It is not a place, but people intended to be a Bujold reference? <<
Not deliberately, no; but she is a favorite writer of mine.

Relevantly, I really like the sense of slow movement in this poem, moving step by step to something better.
Thank you!
Yes, I'm relatively new to this community.

That's one of the themes for the whole series An Army of One, really. My anchor person is particularly intrigued with the social evolution and the problem-solving as they try to secure enough resources to survive.
