A red rose. A single flower. Lonely on the table, in a little vase. A little bit like her...
She's sitting on her couch. Half lying actually. A blanket draped over her legs. A turmoil of feelings inside. Most she can't name, most she can't even identify. There is anger though. Anger and sadness and disappointment.
She balls her fists. Nails digging into her flesh.
The music that is playing makes her smile for a second. The beat and the words fit perfectly. And she wants to dance. Or move - seeing she can't dance. She wants to run and fight and... She stays on her couch. She just stays on the couch. Doing nothing. As usual. So much she wants to do. So much she wants to do and she never does. Chances not taken, not acted upon. She often curses herself for it.
Tears escaping her eyes. A silent curse on her lips. The urge to yell and break and... It hurts so much. Biting her lower lip 'till the skin breaks and she tastes blood. So much she wants to say and never will. So much she wants to do and never will. So much she feels and won't act upon it. So much she wants to name and yet she can't.
Because how can she explain what lives inside her, how can she explain what she feels, when she doesn’t has the words...?
Missed opportunity. A lost chance. She hates her own fears and doubts. Always hesitating. Always too late...
-
A deep intake of breath. Sighing when she breaths the air out again. Flashing a reassuring smile towards Nick when she feels his worried gaze on her.
"Don't worry. I'm just nervous for the upcoming exam."
Even without looking at him, she knows exactly how he is looking at her. Knows he is going to reply and she interrupts him before he can start.
"I know. I know what you are going to say. But... You know me. Never confident enough. Certainly not when it's about me. So, I'm just nervous. But I'm okay."
He knows what she isn't saying. Knows it well enough. They have talked about it often enough.
"I'm going to make you a deal..."
Freya looks at him. Surprised. And just a little bit wary. After all, she knows him well enough.
"You kick ass on this exam - as I know you will, because you always do - and sensei will reward you with the maximum amount of points - as I know he will, because you are good and you totally deserve these points - and you will finally start having a little more faith in yourself, okay?"
And this time it is she who hears what he isn't saying. "And I'll help in any way I can.
She laughs, shaking his hand and confirming the deal.
-
"Freya!"
Surprised she looks around when she hears his voice.
"Nick? What are you doing here?"
She sees him shrug. "Classes this afternoon got cancelled. And I knew you stopped working at 4. And..."
The look on his face - especially the smile - should have warned her the moment she saw him running towards her.
"I haven't forgotten the deal we made a couple of weeks ago."
Her eyes widen a little when he hands her a little package.
"What...?"
Nick just smiles. Urging her to open it.
Chuckling Freya takes the award pin in her hand.
"You're kidding me, right?"
He shakes his head. "Nope. And I fully expect you to wear it."
Awesome friend
Awesome fighter
Awesome person
"And this is supposed to give my confidence a boost? To have more faith in myself? To stop doubting and to just..."
His fingers caress her cheek, brushing a lock of hair out of her face.
"I have faith in you. Why can't you start having some more yourself?"
She smiles and once again shakes her head.
"Stop worrying that much. I could hear the concern with every word you just said. True, I don't have faith in myself, but... it's not that bad..."
There is a silent plea in her voice. One he understands perfectly. "Let it rest for now. But don't stop caring..."
Without a word he nods and takes the pin out of her hand. Pinning it up on her coat. Before opening his arms. Of course Freya accepts the silent invitation. She'd never refuse a hug.
"So, you have any plans for the rest of the day and evening?"
"No, nothing planned."
She steps out of the embrace to look at him. Eyes questioning.
"Want to go out for dinner? And after that for a drink? A friend of mine has a performance somewhere nearby."
Freya nods, linking her arm with Nick's.
"I'd love to. Would you mind pizza terribly much?"
His clear laughter is all the answer she needs.
"And is it that jazz-band you're talking about?"
"Yes indeed."
It makes her smile even broader.
"Perfect."
