Title: In the middle of the night
Story: Shadows in the distance
Characters: Sarah

Supplies and Styles: Canvas - Seed Beads
Word count: 495

Summary: There is something – something – that scares her.
Notes: Constructive criticism is, as always, welcome
Sarah shivers when she hears the thunder clash. So loud it woke her up.
She looks aside, to the cradle where baby Caithlynn is still sleeping soundly. So calm. So peaceful. So unaware of the dangers all around.
A flash. Through the darkness. Lightning. And yet the moon a silver sliver through the clouds. It's visible between the cloths that are used as curtains.
The rain starts falling down, the clouds finally packing together so close that the moon completely disappears from view. The sound of the pouring rain almost loud enough to conceal the Dragon's roar that echoes through the sky. Almost. But she heard it. Sarah heard it. As clear as if the Dragon was standing right next to her.
Something is wrong. She can feel it. Even though she has no magic. Is no wielder. Cannot hear or feel the elements. She knows something is wrong. She can sense it. Something is about to happen. Something... But she doesn't know if it's something good or bad.
Caithlynn's cry startles her and she's out of her bed in a second. Worried.
Bending over the cradle, her hand gently stroking her little girl's head. She pulls back when her daughter's eyes open wide. Her face a mask of panic. Pure, raw panic. Another scream. And it is at that moment that the wind raises in force, pulling back the cloths that cover every entry, every opening.
Sarah looks around. Wary. Confused. There is something... Something she can't name. Can't understand. But it is there. Present in everything all around her. And it scares her. It scares the hell out of her.
Just as sudden as it started, the rain stops falling and the sky clears. The moon as bright and clear as on a summer's night. It reflects in Sarah's eyes. And when she looks back at Caithlynn, the little girl is sleeping again. Just as calm and peaceful as mere minutes before.
Yawning, she feels how are eyes are slowly dropping and she crawls back in her bed. Sighing softly when her head touches the pillow. Almost asleep already.
"Protect her Sarah. Keep her safe..."
The voice of Simon, his breath caressing her cheek, his fingers running lightly through her hair. It makes her smile. Until - even in her sleep - she realises that he isn't here. Can't be here.
Her eyes open wide, her own hand reaching up, trying to catch his in mid-air... But he isn't there.
She closes her eyes. Biting back the tears. Had known it. Of course she had known it. It is impossible for him to be here. No matter how badly she wants it to be real.
Sarah smiles - sadly, but still - when she hears Caithlynn babbling in her sleep. She lets it lull her back to sleep, only vaguely noticing how her daughter seems to mention Simon's name...
The next morning she misses the print of a Dragon claw before her doorstep.

You know he can't, and you know he wanted to... Perhaps I'll have to write Sarah and Simon and AU where they are happy and together?
