“Where is your commander?” Stefan asked.

The man didn’t speak. Though Stefan had his sword to the man’s chest, he kept silent.

“If you value your life, you will tell me where the Aunish commander is,” Stefan said quietly.

“You really think I’d tell you?” The man said lowly. “You Canillian trash! We’ll never
surrender, we’ll fight to the e-“

Stefan pushed hard and the sword broke through the man’s bones. Blood spurted from the wound and it seeped from his mouth.

“You should have just told me where he was,” Stefan said removing the metal.

He turned away. He pulled out a cloth and wiped the blood from the blade as he walked.

“Stefan!”

Stefan looked up and saw his second in command and greatest friend, Gianni Abbadelli, heading towards him.

Stefan allowed a smile to form on his face, but it disappeared just as quickly.

“Did you get any new information?” Gianni asked when he reached Stefan.

“Not a thing. I’ll say one thing for the Aunish king; he inspires loyalty in his soldiers.”

“I wonder where the little bastard is hiding?” Gianni mused.

“He can’t be far,” Stefan said with a slight smirk. “He doesn’t have anywhere left to hide.”

Gianni grinned. “That’s true.”

The men were quiet as they walked back to their bases.

“We are near the capital,” Gianni observed.

“I’ve noticed,” Stefan said.

“I’d like to go see the family and maybe see…”

Stefan chuckled. “Do not tell me you still pine for that Emmelina girl? She’s taken a vow, Gianni.”

Gianni sighed. “Yes, I know. But we…I thought she had feelings for me.”

“Perhaps her feelings for the Church were stronger than her feelings for you?”

Gianni glowered at Stefan. “You don’t have to be so blunt.”

“The truth sets one free, Gianni.”

“Oh? Then I’ll leave you with this advice,” Gianni said stopping outside of Stefan’s tent.

“What?”

“Your enemies are laughing at you, Stefan. They mock your impotence and your military abilities,” Gianni said grimly.

Stefan blanched. “I’ll show the fools who dare mock my army.”

“You’d do well to get a son on your wife, Stefan. You could be killed at any time.”

Stefan turned away.

“Horacia…she’s too young to be a mother, Gianni. I won’t inflict my mother’s fate on her.”

Gianni sighed.

“I’m just giving you advice, Stefan. You don’t have to take it. Who knows, maybe you will conquer all the Menchian kingdoms?”

“You don’t believe I’ll do it, do you?” Stefan asked.

Gianni waved over his shoulder as he walked toward his own tent.

Stefan sighed deeply. Though his men fought hard for him, he knew they still didn’t believe he’d bring all of the surrounding kingdoms under his control. But he would or he’d die trying.

Yeaaaah, I'm with Kay. That's what we'd call tempting fate, Stefan...
