Notes: Maud is the eldest daughter of Cosette, sixth and last queen of Henri I. Maud is 19 in this piece. Gilles married her mother in 1140. Cosette died following complications after giving birth to her last child. Estogne is a march in Monde located near the Laxa Sea. Cosette became Marchioness after her father's death as he had no sons.
“Her Majesty inquired me to ask about the funeral, my lady.”
Maud looked up. The maid was holding an envelope and was clearly waiting for her to answer.
“What did she write?”
“She wants to know if the funeral shall be a funeral of state as benefiting a former queen or…”
“If it’ll be a personal matter?” Maud finished for the girl.
“Well yes, my lady.”
Maud clutched the strand of pearls around her neck. She had thought about this already. It was true that her mother had been the queen, but when she died she had been married to a commoner. But then there was the fact that she was the mother of the king’s child.
“I’m not sure,” Maud started. “Maybe-“
“It should be a personal funeral,” Gilles said coming into the room.
Maud sighed as she eyed her step-father. His usually clean shaven face was covered in blond stubble. He looked like he hadn’t changed out of the clothes she had found him in when she first arrived at the estate.
“Gilles, you must realize that she was the Queen at one time,” Maud said.
“So? She wasn’t when she died.”
“Yes, but everyone still recognized as her as a queen. She was much loved, you know.”
“Yes, I know,” Gilles said raising his hands. “But she my wife and I get to decide-“
“Actually, Rene gets to decide.”
“What?” Gilles grunted out.
“Rene is her heir and he is now the new Marquis of Estogne. According to the law, he would be over her estate.”
Gilles opened his mouth but was cut off by Maud.
“According to the law, the eldest male child gets the estate and has control over it.”
“But-“
“What about her will?” Maud finished for him. “Mother didn’t change her will or else I’m sure you’d be in control, of course, dear Gilles.”
Gilles glared at his step-daughter.
“And according to Rene, I have the freedom to decide about this matter, though of course he told me I should take your advice into account.”
“I should think so,” Gilles threw out.
Maud smiled. “So I think we shall have a private funeral here for the family and a state funeral in the capital. Mother will be buried here, of course.”
“Of course,” Gilles said staring into Maud’s blue eyes.
Maud nodded and turned to the maid, who was watching their exchange somewhat bemusedly.
“Write to Her Majesty and tell her of our plans.”
“Yes, my lady.”
The maid left leaving Gilles alone with Maud. He turned to her.
“When did you become so responsible, Maud?” Gilles asked in a weird tone.
“Oh, I suppose when the little prince died,” Maud said speaking of her younger brother.
“Makes sense,” Gilles said. “Exactly like your mother, it seems.”
He left then leaving Maud to the arrangements.
