“Your father has sent me to ask you which charities you would like to support, Your Highness.”
Marie turned away from her window and faced her best friend, Adelais de la Fay. The girl was a year older than she and one of her oldest companions as they’d known each other since they were girls.
“Bring the book over here,” Marie said patting the plush blood red couch that featured in her receiving room.
Adelais walked over and sat down with it. She handed it to Marie.
“Which charities do you think I should support, Adelais?”
“Oh I don’t know,” Adelais said as Marie flipped through the heavy book. “You should pick the ones closest to your heart.”
Marie stopped on a page. “What about this one? The Charity for the Orphans of the 1116 Ibertian-Mondian War.”
“I think that would be perfect for you to be a benefactress to, my lady.”
“Oh but...,” Marie said reading the names on the page. “It appears she gave to this particular charity.”
“Oh…” Adelais said distastefully.
Marie continued to read the page. She shouldn’t be thinking about that woman now. She was out of her life and she would never be coming back. She shouldn’t let her rule her life anymore, she couldn’t.
“The orphans need my help,” Marie said finally. “I shall make this my first charity to support upon my coming out to good society.”
Adelais smiled. “Very good choice, my lady princess.”
