Notes: Luisa is Marie's natural half sister through their shared father, Henri I. Luisa was three years older than Marie. Marie is about 17 in this piece and Jehann is about 20.
Jehann looked all over to the palace for her. He had asked her ladies where she was, but they wouldn’t give him a straight answer. He knew she needed him right now.
After searching for twenty minutes, he finally figured out where she might be, the only place she could be at a time like this.
He made his way to the chapel. He knocked quietly on the door before opening it and peering inside. Indeed Marie was inside. She was bent in front of a statue of the Holy Mother.
“So you’ve found me?” She asked without looking up.
Jehann bent down next to her. She kept her ice blue eyes trained on the marble statue.
“I heard…about Luisa.”
Marie sighed. “I can’t believe it. I just can’t…”
“Did she go peacefully?”
“They say she did, but of course they could be trying to spare my feelings, more likely they’re trying to spare Father’s feelings. He really thought the world of Luisa.”
“How do you feel?” Jehann asked putting his arm around her.
“She was my sister,” Marie said softly. “She was so lively, yet gentle. All she ever wanted was a family of her own and now she’s not even around to enjoy that? Why is the world such a cruel, unforgivable place?”
“If I ever find out, I’ll tell you.”
Marie sniffed. “I’ll have to attend her funeral. I don’t think I can though. I don’t want to say goodbye to her. This entire year has been…a whirlwind to say the least.”
Jehann nodded.
Marie took a breath and stood up. Jehann stood as well.
“You should leave first, so no one will know we were in here together. People will talk.”
Jehann nodded slowly. He moved towards her, but moved back again.
“Marie?”
“Yes?” She said looking up at him.
He touched her shoulder before leaning in and kissing her cheek softly.
“What?” She started.
“I’ll always be here whenever you need me,” he said softly. He turned and walked down the aisle toward the entrance. He turned one last time and smiled at her before slipping out.
Marie touched the cheek he had kissed. She wasn’t sure, but she thought it might have been her first.
