“Seth, did you do your homework?” Claire asked as she walked in the living room.
Seth cheered, Choushin groaned as the word “LOST” flashed on the tv screen in front of them.
“Come on, one more game!” Choushin begged.
Seth smiled. “If you want to get beat again, fine.”
“Wait,” Claire walked over to the couch and crossed her arms over her chest. Seth rubbed the back of his neck as Choushin tried to sink in her seat. “I thought I said no games until you finished your work.”
“I know, but I had to show Chou how to do this part and--” Seth started when Claire shook her head.
“I said no game until everything was finished. If you’re going to...” Claire started when she noticed the pendant around Seth’s neck. “W-Where did you get that?”
Seth set his face as he gripped the pendant and looked up at Claire. “It was in the box of things dad left me. He said I wasn’t supposed to get it until I was an adult demon, but, I, he said, in the letter that I…” He trailed off as he balled his fists at his sides.
Claire felt her stomach start to twist at the way Seth’s fists started to shake. “Seth, if you want to wear it, it’s fine. We can still go through the ceremony when you’re old enough to get your own shadow, instead of using the ones around you.”
“Really? We can!?” Seth looked up expectantly.
Claire nodded. “Yes, we can.”
Seth smiled and hugged her. “Thanks mom!”
Claire squeezed him back. “You’re welcome sweetheart. Now, you can’t get your shadow if you don’t do well in school.”
“I get it. I’ll go finish my work.” Seth sighed as he turned his controller off.
“I can help you, if you need it.” Choushin offered before she saved their place and turned the system off.
“Thanks. I think I do.” Seth stood up and stretched his arms above his head. He looked back over at Claire and rubbed the back of his neck. “Um, I’ll be finished in a bit. I’ll let you know when I am.”
“Okay, you can play your game when you’re done.”
“I can?”
“Yes.”
Seth grinned as he grabbed Choushin’s hand. “Come on let’s hurry up! I want to kick your butt again.”
“We’ll see!” Choushin laughed as she walked out the room with him.
Claire smiled at them before she plopped down on the sofa. She closed her eyes and took a slow breath, as the knot unraveled in her stomach. She could still see Axel’s smile after he bought the pendant a few days after Seth’s birth. The way his eyes twinkled when he talked about Seth having the same pendant, cut from the same stone as his own, in a few years. She opened her eyes and slid her fingers through her hair. She didn’t think Seth would be ready to wear something like that yet.
When they moved to their new home, Claire made sure to get rid of any reminders that might upset Seth. However, she didn’t think that getting rid of Axel’s things may have a negative effect on him. Claire sat up at the thought that passed through her mind. She may have gotten rid of his things, but not his presence. Axel lived on in Seth, Chou, Bernard, Daisuke, and anyone else who met him.
Claire leaned back and touched the chain that held her ring and pendant. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe that’s the reason Seth is having a hard time adjusting to the house. She stood up and walked over to the hallway closet. She grabbed the first box closest to her and walked back to the living room.
I hope I can fix this. Claire pulled her hair back and opened the box. When she finished the mantle, she worked on the paintings he bought, and the miniature statues from different areas. When she finished one box, she walked over to the closet to grab another, then another. Claire worked on the living room until she heard her name.
“Mom, I’m finished with my work, can I go back to my game?” Seth asked as he walked in.
“Sure, let me finish this box and you can start your game again.” Claire said. She looked up when Seth didn’t respond. Seth looked around the room as Choushin watched from the doorway.
Maybe I’m right and this is too early. Claire bit her lip, ready to put everything back, when Seth walked over to the box and pulled out their family picture. He placed it on the mantle next to Claire and Axel’s wedding photo.
“It was, um, missing something.” Seth mumbled as he messed with his shirt.
Claire walked over to Seth and placed her arm around his shoulders. “It was.”
Seth smiled as he leaned into Claire. Claire pressed a kiss in his hair and squeezed his shoulders.
Her little boy was stronger than she thought.
