Thomas is Henri's maternal uncle through Henri's mother, Jeanne (1109-1127). Henri I died in Durin 1139.

Thomas walked behind his twelve year old nephew, Henri II, newly king of this fair country. He could tell the boy was scared. He kept looking behind him and to his uncle.

They stopped in front of the council chamber door. Henri reached for the knob, but pulled his hand back.

“Go on, Your Majesty,” Thomas said.

Henri took a deep breath and opened the door. He walked carefully inside.

“Luc!”

Lord Luc le Cleric, aged 17, and one of the boy’s greatest friends was sitting at the council table. Henri ran over to him.

“What are you doing here?”

Luc laughed. “I’m on the council, of course.”

“Really?”

“Well I’m taking my father’s place,” Luc said messing with the official pin that the councilors wore. “He said it was time I took some responsibility.”

Henri smiled. Thomas guided him to the head of the table and then took a seat to the right of him.

“Uh, what’s the first order of business?” Henri said in an imitation of his recently deceased father.

“We need to start minting new coins for your reign,” Luc said.

“Already?” Henri asked turning to Thomas.

“Yes, Your Majesty,” Thomas said shuffling papers. “New money has always been minted when a new monarch ascends to the throne. His Majesty had been dead for a month and your coronation must be planned as well.”

“I see,” Henri said.

“So shall we start on that?” Thomas asked though he really didn’t wait for an answer.

“Yes,” Henri said in a strange voice.

“Alright,” Luc said. “Let’s move on.”

Well, at least the kid has a friend on the council.
