Notes: The Duke of Oissen is one the most prestigious duchies in the kingdom of Monde and the Duke, Aillard (1092- ) was one of the first to support Henri and Anna's marriage. Thomas (1105- ) is the heir to the county of Sudme and the brother of Jeanne, Henri's latest paramour and potential third queen.
Thomas stared into her cold grey eyes. She didn’t look away like a true virtuous woman would, but continued to stare at him as he questioned her.
“You plotted with your lover, Aillard Osmont, the Duke of Oissen, to not only to kill your husband, the King, but his daughter, the Princess Marie-Therese, so that your child, Princess Elisabeth could be queen and you and your lover could rule in her name.”
“I did no such thing,” Queen Anna stated calmly.
Thomas slapped his hand against the wood table. He stood up.
“Do you deny that you had relations not only with His Grace but with a number of men?”
“I am no whore,” Anna said.
“That’s subjective,” Thomas said walking closer to her.
“You must remember, Lord Thomas that I am still the queen and as such you will respect me.”
Thomas walked away from her. She was proving more persistent than he had expected.
“Is it true that you had affairs before your marriage?”
“If I had such an affair, it was as you say before my marriage and thus has no bearing in this conversation, am I right?”
Thomas growled.
Anna smiled. “I thought I was brought here to discuss my affairs after my marriage.”
“So you admit you had affairs?”
“It was a rhetorical question, my lord.”
This woman was maddening. How could he get her to break? Only one of the accused had admitted anything. He needed her to break. He needed her confession or else these proceedings would never end.
“Are you a witch?”
She laughed. The bitch laughed. She was mocking him!
“Aren’t witches a product of an overactive imagination, my lord?”
“You know as well as I that witchcraft is abound around us,” Thomas said lowly.
Anna laced her fingers together. “You think yourself a very religious man, Lord Thomas.”
“I’m a faithful Brondian unlike some people I might mention.”
“Yet you tell falsities and you are a greedy man. Forgive me for it has been awhile since I read the Narratives, but Brondism preaches against that, doesn’t it?”
“You dare question, my faith?”
“Why not, when you question my chastity?”
“You, Your Majesty, have never had much chastity. Why I’d be surprised if your children weren’t some other man’s by blow.”
“You bastard!”
Thomas smiled suddenly. He walked closer to her. She didn’t look up when he stood next to her.
“You’d do anything for your children, wouldn’t you?”
“As any mother would,” Anna said without turning to him.
Thomas bent closer.
“What will happen to your daughters if you are found guilty? Their mother, a convicted traitor and adulteress, their reputations would be stained and no man would have them for a wife.”
“Shut your mouth!”
“I speak the truth, Your Majesty. Your situation doesn’t look so good. We have evidence from your own ladies and not to mention a letter written in your hand to your lover. Why not confess?”
She turned to him then. “Even if I confess, I’ll be put to death. My daughters will be tarnished no matter what I do.”
Thomas didn’t say anything. He straightened back up.
“You have a choice, Your Majesty. You can keep on fighting, but the longer this takes, the more the rumors will fly.”
He walked past her and opened up the door. He looked back at one more time, but she staring forward. He closed the door behind him.
“Did she break?” Gilles, his younger brother, asked coming up to him.
“No, but I have a feeling this will all be over soon.”
