Mount St Helens stands on the mantelpiece, ready to spew, not ash and smoke, but salt and pepper.

Light spills in a fountain from the floor-lamp's high crater and spreads across the room.

The cat flows down from the sofa arm, meandering to his food dish; he knocks it over, creating a sandbar of kibble.

Tropical breezes puff from the hearth, where fire's younger cousin the electric space-heater crouches.

This is our little world.
