Notes: Diana is the elder of the two twins of Henri I and his fifth wife, Martine Bauldry. Theodore has been the Baron of Nolline since 1135 when his father died.

The twin princesses were staying with their maternal family for the Ambrosius of 1142. Ana was perched on their uncle, Valetin’s, lap and he was singing to her. Diana turned to watch Uncle Theodore.

He was sitting in a corner by himself. Diana had wanted to speak with him for some time. She had repeatedly begged her brother, King Henri I, to allow them to spend time with the Bauldrys. He had finally relented as the latest possible moment and the twins had set out for Nolline.
Diana walked slowly toward her uncle. He didn’t appear to hear her approach. She stood beside him waiting for him to notice her. Finally she tapped his shoulder.

“Uncle?”

Theodore looked up and smiled softly when he noticed her.

“Hello little princess.”

Diana smiled. “I was wondering if I could ask you a question.”

“Go on,” Theodore said hesitantly.

Diana sat at his feet. “Will you tell me about my mother?”

She watched the color drain from his face and his lips thinned.

“Diana…”

She grabbed his hands as he moved to stand. “Please uncle! No one else will tell me anything.”

“It’s best not to relive the past, Diana.”

Diana held her breath. She had been prepared for a fight.

“Uncle, I only want to know what she was like. She was my mother.”

Theodore sighed and sat back down. “It’s dangerous to talk about traitors, Diana.”

“Father is dead,” Diana said quietly. “I’m sure brother doesn’t care whether someone mentions the disgraced former queen.”

“How much do you know about your mother, Diana?”

“I don’t know much. I read the papers from the trial and few letters that my father sent her and things like that.”

“You must understand, my dear, that your mother was a restless creature.”

“What does that mean?”

“She…she was always searching for something. I don’t know what and you must know that we weren’t the closet siblings. By the time she was born, I was eighteen. She was closer to Severin.”

Diana nodded. Severin had gone to the block along with his sister. She had read his statements in the court papers.

“Theodore?”

He turned at the sound of the voice. His wife was calling to him. He started to get up, but Diana stopped him.

“Will you tell me more?”

Theodore looked into his niece’s blue eyes. Though she took remarkably after her father, he could see some of Martine in her. He couldn’t refuse her.

“I will.”

She smiled and he was instantly reminded of Martine at that age. She had already owned hearts.

Theodore kissed Diana’s blonde head. He hoped that Diana wouldn’t go down her mother’s path and he would do anything to stop that from happening.

Well, telling her about it is a good start. I'm glad he decided he could open up a bit.

I think it would be good for Theodore to tell Diana more. He seems like he's still grieving, and this might help. Plus Diana should know about her mother.
