Notes: This takes place like 500 years before the current action. Matilide is the daughter of Jean II. By this point in the story, her father has been dead for seven years. Aignen is Matilide's regnant. She is about fourteen when this takes place. Oh and I've been kinda MIA over the past month, but I intend to make up for that!

Matilide was eating a simple breakfast of bread, brown eggs, and beef when the door to the dining room opened.

She swallowed and looked up. It was her mother and him.

“Good morning Mama,” Matilide said.

Queen Agna smiled and bent down and kissed her daughter’s cheek.

He cleared his throat. Matilide sighed and acknowledged him.

“Good morning, Aignen.”

“Good morning, Your Majesty.”

Matilide pasted a fake smile on her face as Aignen sat down across from her. Her mother sat down beside her.

Matilide pushed a slice of beef into her mouth. She watched Aignen watch her as she chewed as loudly as she could.

“Sweeting, you should chew smaller bites,” Agna said brushing stray wisps of black hair out of her daughter’s face.

Matilide swallowed and wiped the juices from her chin. She smiled at her mother.

“What do you want?” Matilide started. “I usually eat breakfast alone.”

“Which you shouldn’t,” Aignen said pompously. “You’re the Queen, plenty of nobles would be happy to eat the food you drop.”

“I don’t want to force my presence on others,” Matilide said with her chin in the air. “Like some people, I know.”

“Matilide,” Agna warned.

Aignen ignored the remark. “Your mother and I have been making plans-“

“You sure do make a lot of plans without the knowledge of your monarch,” Matilide said bitingly.

“Yes, well when the monarch is but a child and a girl child as that, one must often proceed without it.”

Matilide’s eyes flashed but she didn’t say anything.

“Your mother and I have decided that is time that you chose a consort.”

“She decided or you decided?”

“We both decided dear,” Agna said.

“Yes, as I said, we decided. You will soon reach your majority-“

“In two years or so, but do go on,” Matilide said sarcastically.

Aignen flexed his fingers. “We have decided to call all of your suitors here to Morelessa.”
“I wasn’t aware I had any suitors,” Matilide said.

“A girl such as yourself with a handsome dowry and a kingdom of your own would naturally have plenty of suitors.

“It sounds more like that want my lands and my funds more than they want me,” Matilide observed.

“A young woman sweetens the pot, of course,” Aignen said. “And the chance to be king.”

“No man shall be king while I am queen. Not even you.”

“A woman needs a man to rule,” Aignen started.

“Not this woman.”

Aignen stared at her coldly. Matilide smirked.

“Whatever the case, your suitors shall come to the capital and you will choose.”

“And if I choose none?”

Aignen smiled then. “You will choose, my queen.”

“So say you,” Matilide shot back.

Aignen pushed the chair back and stood up. He bowed to Matilide and then to her mother before leaving the room.

“He thinks highly of himself,” Matilide said returning to her now cold food and tearing off a piece of bread.

“He knows what’s best, Matilide.”

Matilide rolled her eyes at her mother and plopped the bread into her mouth. It would be two more years until she reached her sixteenth year and then she could rule on her own. The first thing she would do would be to get rid of Aignen. And she wouldn’t need a husband to do that.

Good luck, Matilide! Seriously, I'm cheering her on here.

I hope Matilide is able to oust Aignen from her court. He seems like he could be a dangerous man.
