Alexei paced back and forth outside his wife's room as he waited to hear from the healer. He was very concerned about the nausea and sickness that Irina had been feeling as of late and he hoped that she had not come down with anything life-threatening.
When the healer came out with his wife, he stopped pacing and looked at them, noticing that his wife was beaming.
“Alexei,” said Irina, “I'm pregnant. The healer says that it's not abnormal for women to have morning sickness when they're with child.”
He could not find the words to speak. So many feelings, many of them conflicting, rushed through him. But his overwhelming feeling was that of joy and he smiled.
“I knew we were talking of possibly having children...but to actually know that you..that you're pregnant...it's wonderful.” Alexei walked over to Irina and hugged her gently.
After returning his embrace, Irina said, “I'm glad you can find joy in this. I know you've been anxious about possibly having a child, what with the family curse, but I think you wanted a child as much as I did.”
“Well, if it's a daughter, I don't have much to worry about...it's any possible sons that we might have that I'd worry for,” said Alexei, “But...since we won't know if our child is a girl or a boy until, well, he's born...let's not worry.” He stroked Irina's hair and smiled while holding her close.
“We should send a message to your sister,” said Irina, “Maybe she'll know something that will protect the child from the curse. If we act before the curse hits...maybe there's a chance. I know Sofiya was the one who gave you some freedom from the curse and...oh Alexei, I love you.”
“I love you too, Irina,” said Alexei, “It's amazing to thing that we two, together can create a new life, but it's also frightening...I mean, what if I am a horrible father...I haven't had the best example myself.”
Irina sighed and gave Alexei a quick kiss. “I love you and you are far from a horrible person. Now, don't you dare correct me because from what I know, you are nothing like your father and you've never mistreated me and I think that's a sign that you'll do right by our child.”
“You really think so?”
“Yes, I really think so, Alexei dear,” said Irina with a wry smile, “You always doubt yourself so much. Sometimes I wonder if you'll ever start trusting yourself.”
“I trust you.”
“And I trust you. Now if only you could trust yourself,” said Irina with a laugh as she shook her head slightly.
Alexei sighed as well and said, “Well, I suppose we two ought to celebrate somehow. What do you think would be appropriate?”
“Well, Alexei,” said Irina with a devious smile, “All I want to do right now is spend time with my wonderful husband and maybe later we can announce it to the kingdom that we will be having a child. After we tell your sister, of course.”
“I think I too would like to spend some time with you too.”
