Notes: Tucia is a country in Adeodata. Edward is the king thus making Marguerite queen. They've been married for about a year or so in this piece. Algar Howland is a Tucian author that Marguerite looks up to. Both characters refer to the incident partially depicted in Silver Lining.

Marguerite dipped her pen in the inkwell.

She wanted to write Elisabeth. She had been in Tucia for almost a year, but Betha had yet to write to her. She knew that her sister was busy, what with being a queen and having two young children under the age of three. But despite knowing this, she couldn’t help but feel jealous of her nephew and niece.

Betha was all she had. Of course she had her other siblings, but she and Betha had always been together. They had grown up together, had been taught together and it wasn’t until Betha had been sent to Albabias that they had been separated. The truth was that she didn’t know what to do without her sister.

“Marguerite?”

She turned at the sound of his voice. He had come to see her, her Edward.

She smiled broadly at him. “Hello, darling!”

Edward grinned. She loved his grin. Somehow he managed to look dashing and mischievous at the same time.

“I’ve brought you something.”

“What?” She asked excitedly.

“Close your eyes.”

“Oh, just give me the present,” Marguerite teased reaching behind his back.

“Close your eyes, Marguerite.”

“Come on!” She said laughing.

“Marguerite.” His tone changed.

She stopped and looked up at him. He looked serious, though there was still a spark of mirth in his eye.

“Okay,” she said closing her eyes.

She heard him moving around. She wanted to peek, but she dutifully kept her eyes shut.

“Okay, you may open your eyes.”

Marguerite opened her eyes. She looked up Edward, who was smiling at her.

She looked in front of her before releasing a squeal.

“Really Marguerite, you need to control that little habit,” Edward said disapprovingly but smiled anyway.

“You’ve gotten me a copy of Howland’s first book!”

Edward sat down next to her. “Yes, indeed. I know you love his work.”

Marguerite clutched the book to her chest. “I studied his works in the schoolroom, though our tutors wouldn’t let us read all of his works, especially this one.”

“Well, it’s not particularly suitable for a woman let alone a princess.”

Marguerite smiled. “But you got it for me anyway.”

“I wanted to apologize for yelling at you the other day.”

Marguerite chased the golden letters on the spine. She had forgotten about that little incident.

“I shouldn’t have interrupted.”

“I should have kept my temper,” Edward said playing with the ring on her finger. “I’m always letting my temper get the best of me.”

“It happens to the best of us,” Marguerite said clutching his hand.

“It won’t happen again,” Edward said looking her in the eye.

She smiled. “Of course, it won’t.”

He smiled back and pressed a kiss against her forehead.

“I must be leaving. We are going for a hunt today.”

Marguerite stood as he did. She wished he would stay with her for a little while more. She
opened her mouth to suggest this, but she closed it. He wasn’t just her Edward. He belonged to the people as well. So she settled on wishing him luck.

“Don’t get hurt,” she said following him to the door.

He smiled and kissed her cheek slightly before pressing a kiss against her lips.

“I never get hurt. I’m the best there is.”

She smiled but didn’t say anything else.

Famous last words, Edward. I have a feeling Marguerite's happiness here won't last.
