There were ways to get around the seer's formidable perceptions. It wasn't easy, but it could be done. Smokescreens and forged dispatches making her focus overmuch on the War, so she wouldn't see the danger closer to home.

He swept along the temple's passageways, in a stolen priest's robe--further cloud her perceptions, if she saw him coming, she'd see the robe, and he was moving like he belonged. As talented as she was, there was little chance she would grow suspicious.

He resisted the urge to finger the knife he had secreted up his sleeve. That would give him away if she was watching. He was sure of its location, heavy and cold on his forearm, sure of the drug coating it so she would be docile when he pulled her out of here. He wouldn't even have to stab her for it to work, just cut her--shallow, even, no real harm--and wait.

There had been previous plans to kidnap her, naturally. A few nobles and priests with their own ambitions, the requisite spies during the late War, people acting out of jealousy--of her gifts or her position, it varied. None had gotten close.

Not until now.

Queen Kesshare was power-mad, empire-mad, the prospect of welding their sacred Crown with that of their all-too-recent enemy galled him beyond words. They were of the desert, the desert was their realm, and even the less sickening conquests--to the south and east--should not be. Queen Kesshare and her madness would bring them all to icy doom.

Unless he could stop her.

For that, he needed the seer.

He reached her door, and took a half-second to pray that his precautions had held, that she had no idea he was a threat, that this would go well.

He pushed open the door, and almost choked on the acrid haze of smoke filling the room. He felt something needle-sharp pressing into his side, and blinked tears from his eyes. What was on the fire?

"I will not spill blood on sacred ground," she said, hoarse but calm. "But I will not be brought off it against my will." She forced him to his knees and retrieved his knife. How she could do it without seeing was--

But of course. She'd known.

"My sister taught me a few tricks," she said. "I'm not helpless."

Everything beneath the smoke was hazy, and he heard a chime ring out.

"The smoke...will make us both sleep," she continued. "Among other things. You'll probably...cough, your eyes and face irritated...for a few days." Her voice sounded farther and farther away. "But we'll recover. In time."

He'd taken such care, and it came to this. Disarmed and drugged by a seer who supposedly couldn't fight.

"May you find peace," he thought he heard her whisper over the crackling flames, then his grip on alertness faded entirely.

So clearly he didn't plan for every possibility. Interesting to see what will happen to him next.

Kirana, you are the BEST. And I like that you both thought of the difficulties getting around a seer and the not quite managing it.

Heh heh, she totally outmaneuvered him. Excellent.
