“Like I can't believe Alexa,” Mari said throwing her hands up in the air.
“Here we go again,” Jennika said flipping the page in her magazine.
“She's been so freaking annoying lately,” Mari said pulling at her white ruffled blouse.
“I know the feeling,” Jennika said without looking up.
Mari nudged Jennika, but the blonde didn't look up.
“I mean she has talked about going to on this field trip since like freshman year and she just misses it?”
Jennika sighed. “Mr. El-Amin says she's sick. If she's sick, then she wouldn't have came.”
Mari rolled her eyes and looked out the bus window. They were headed to Lakeport to see the College of Louisiana to talk about their college options.
“I don't know, Jen. She just seems so ornery all the time. It's out of character for her.”
“And you don't think you're being ornery?” Jennika asked finally looking up from her magazine.
“What are you trying to say?” Mari asked testily.
“I'm just saying that you and Alexa...both of you guys have been butting heads. Of course, you've always been brash...”
“I am not brash, Jennika Wilcox!” Mari said trying to hide her smile.
“Oh yeah, then what would you call it?”
“Exuberant. That's what Abuela says.”
“She's just trying to be nice,” Jennika said applying her deep red lipstick. “Me? I don't have any familial relation to you, so I can say it.”
“Whatever,” Mari said turning back to the window.
“Students, we are almost to the college,” the ninth grade English teacher said up front. “I want all of you to behave. I want you to make a good impression on the faculty and show them that you are ready for the world of higher education.”
There was a loud farting noise that followed the teacher's words.
“Ew, oh my god!” Lana said pinching her nose.
The bus broke out in laughter.
“Yes, we are so ready for the world of higher education,” Mari said shaking her head.
