Notes: Charlotte has appeared in one fic that I have posted here, I believe? She's the future wife of Jean Luc Everart (aka Verste for the title the King bestowed upon him) who's sister is Anna. Cyril is the Count of Aube, a county in Monde. Charlotte is also the eldest of her siblings.

“What did you say?” Her father spluttered.

Charlotte put down her book. She tapped her long fingers on the edge of the book.

“I refuse to accept his proposal,” Charlotte said standing up.

“Now you just wait a minute!” Cyril hollered. “I haven't excused you yet, Charlotte.”

Charlotte faced the door with her back to her father. She debated internally whether or not to disobey her father and leave the room. She sighed as she decided against it.

“Charlotte, why can't you understand that marrying the Count of Verste is a good thing. He will one inherit the entire duchy of Cadomiselle and you know his sister has the King's affections. Think of what that could do for our family!”

Charlotte grimaced. “Father, what more could we ask for? We might not be the richest nobles in the land, but we are far from poor.”

Cyril came closer to her and put his hands of her shoulders.

“I want influence, Charlotte. I want power,” he said softly. “Do you know the heights we could reach with the King's ear? Just think you'll be his sister-in-law. We'd be invited to the palace. Your children would be cousins to his.”

Charlotte's eyes narrowed. “That's only if I decide to accept Verste's marriage proposal.”

Cyril shook his head and let go of her shoulders.

“You foolish girl. Why do you not want to marry him? He's good looking, he's rich and I've heard he's a nice man.”

Charlotte looked down and gripped her skirt.

“I just...don't want to marry him. I haven't even reached my majority yet, Father.”

Cyril snorted. “You're only a year away for being seventeen, Charlotte. Your mother married me at your age and look at her now.”

Yes, she's greatly unhappy and she shuts herself away and never comes out even for meals. Charlotte thought to herself.

“I am not ready to marry, Father. Couldn't we wait for four or five years? If Verste really wants my hand, I suppose he could wait.”

“Wait?” Cyril asked incredulously. “You do not make the Everarts wait. The Duke is anxious for his son to marry.”

“Then let him find a bride somewhere else,” Charlotte pleaded.

“You listen to me, Charlotte,” Cyril said pointing his finger in her face. “I only asked to be courteous, whether you like it or not, you will marry Verste. You will pop out an heir and you will bring great honor to this family.”

Charlotte opened her mouth to speak. But Cyril held up his hand.

“No more arguing, Charlotte. I will accept Verste's offer on your behalf. Then we will arrange your dowry and trousseau.”

“But Father!”

Cyril opened the door and stepped out. He gave Charlotte one more look.

“Be grateful. You'll bring great honor to the Duvalls. Won't that be nice?”

He closed the door behind him. Charlotte kicked the chair beside it and immediately regretted it.

She turned and fought to keep her tears at bay. She had long accepted that she would have to marry someday despite her views on the entire institution. But she didn't think it would be so soon. She at least thought she had another year.

“And now I'll have become a breeding mare to Verste's whim,” Charlotte said to herself. She had never really wanted children. The only thing she wanted, she knew she could never have. That was her lot in life, Unlucky Charlotte. Doomed to spend an eternity in marriage.

Poor Charlotte! Especially having grown up seeing a marriage like that, no wonder she doesn't want to marry.

Funny how the power hungry never get that memo. But what does Charlotte's father care when he could get to cozy up to the King? Horrible situation for Charlotte.

I hope she has a comfortable life, at least. Being forced into something sucks, no matter how expected it is.

Oh, poor Charlotte. I can totally understand her trepidations about marriage--especially to someone she didn't even choose for herself--when her main impression of marriage is her parents. Hopefully she doesn't completely withdraw from the world like her mother did.
