“Why have you called us here?” Christina asked picking up her coffee cup.
Julio didn't say anything. He kept opening the door and looking outside of it.
“Julio!” Christina yelled.
“What!” Julio yelled back turning to face her.
“I have to be at work in an hour,” Christina said.
“Yeah and I have somewhere to be,” Mari said without looking up from her book.
“You don't have anywhere to be,” Julio mumbled.
“I heard that and you don't know, I have a very busy social life.”
Julio barked out a laugh.
“Don't make fun of your sister,” Christina said lighting a cigarette.
There was a knock on the door and Julio rushed to open it. Juana Rodriguez smiled pleasantly as she stepped inside.
“Hello bebe,” Juana said kissing Julio on the cheek.
“Good morning, Abuela,” Julio said smiling.
“It stinks in here,” Juana said sitting down on the other side of Mari. “You know those cigarettes are bad for you, Christina.”
Christina rolled her eyes, but put out the cigarette.
“So why have you called us here?” Mari said sitting down her book. “You made Abuela get out of bed this early for what?”
“Oh bebe, I'm up with the chickens,” Juana said placing her hand on Mari's shoulder.
“I wanted you all to be here when I told you,” Julio said wringing his hands together.
The three women looked up at him silently.
“I'm getting married,” Julio said.
The room was quiet as each of them digested the news.
“You're what?” Juana said standing up.
“He said he's getting married!” Mari said shaking her head.
“Julio, have you lost your mind?” Juana said.
“No, of course not, Abuela! I just, I really love this girl.”
“Did you get her pregnant?” Juana said slowly.
“Mother, he's my son,” Christina said standing up.
“Oh and what good is that? You can't control your children, Christina. Mari is flunking and Julio is throwing away his education!”
“Excuse me!” Christina said stepping close to her mother.
“I'm not flunking, Abuela,” Mari said muttering.
“And I'm not dropping out of college either,” Julio said gripping his grandmother's shoulder.
“I had high hopes for you,” Juana said tiredly. “Why can't you wait until you finish school to get married?”
Julio looked into Juana's eyes. “Abuela, I love her and yes we are starting a family, but it won't ruin anything, I promise!”
“That's the same thing your mother said when she married your father.”
“Mother, you are walking a fine line,” Christina warned.
Juana shrugged off Julio's hands.
“You two will be the death of me,” Juana said opening the door. She looked at them one last time before slamming the door behind her.
“You notice she didn't say anything about me,” Marie said grinning up at them.
Julio sighed and plopped down on the couch next to her.
Christina grabbed at her cigarette case. “There's breakfast in the oven. I'm off to work.”
“Bye Mom,” Mari said standing up and walking back to her room.
Christina closed the door behind her leaving Julio alone in the room. He had hoped that they would take the news well, but things just didn't go that way in the Rodriguez family.
