Subject: #571896-
Entry: 001
Status: Achieved

Subject is the first successful hybrid of its type, created of genetic material salvaged from meteorites originating in the ---------- system, two types of terrestrial sentient nonhumans, produced using a human genetic shell. Gestation was therefore estimated to be similar to human, and the subject was removed from the incubator as scheduled, and successfully took a breath.

The Developer looked down on his creation and smiled. Two decades of research and failed attempts at producing a terrestrial/non-terrestrial hybrid with sentience. Bacteria, of course, and algae and various other lower forms of life had been success stories for nearly half that time. Old news.

But this...

This little creature, this little child, living and breathing on its own with all the promise of sentience to come, golden-skinned with colorless eyes...

This was his true victory, his crowning achievement. The best part was that he was still young enough to watch his creation grow.

Subject is hitting developmental milestones as expected for a six-week-old child. So far, no displays of extraordinary ability, either physical or cognitive, but the Developer remains optimistic. Blood draws show no significant medical benefit to the subject's unique chemistry, but more research remains to be done.

1. army

The Developer examines another slide, this one of tissue. Hard to biopsy--so much for no medical benefits, ha, flexible, sensitive skin that resists most cutting instruments--but he can't yet identify why.

He steps back from the microscope, and watches as an assistant takes the child up and feeds her. For all her solid skin, he can't suppress that niggling feeling of doubt that his creation is so distressingly normal. He reassures himself that, with more data, surely she'll prove to be less of a waste of time and resources.

She is a pretty child, at least, and endlessly patient with the endless line of tests, doctors, researchers, and assistants.

If only she weren't so normal.

Subject is verbal and prattles on like any other six-year-old girl. Still no evidence of supernatural abilities--the Developer stresses perhaps overmuch the impenetrable elasticity of her skin. Medical tech developed from it is already approaching Release status. Subject enjoys music and shiny things, but has a strong aversion to water--why this is so has yet to be adequately explained.

"I WON'T!"

The Developer puts his foot down. "We're not having this argument again, Eight Ninety-Six," he says, no longer even trying to appear patient. "Get in the tub."

"It HURTS I WON'T YOU CAN'T MAKE ME." She's kicking at him now, and it hurts far more than a child her size should be able to. He makes a mental note to figure out how to test that.

"I can and I will." Attempting to dodge her flailing limbs with limited success, he scoops her up and dumps her in the tub. As always, she screams, and as always she comes out clean with no evidence of harm, despite her caterwauling.

The Developer leaves the rest to his assistant--she can sometimes get the brat to cooperate, but lacks the physical strength to manhandle her into the tub--and goes to plan how to test his creation's newly discovered strength.

Subject: #571896-
Entry: 317
Status: Acquisitive

Subject has developed the habit of secreting away anything portable left with her. This is a trait of the -------- terrestrial species, and the first time one of them has been dominant, rather than the human traits dominating. The Developer shows an increased interest in his project, and has spent hours trying to locate all her caches.

10. retreat

"Eight Ninety-Six, where did you put it?"

She rolls her eyes--twelve now, and, despite the promising new squirreling tendency, still behaving like a particularly bratty human female of appropriate age. "Put what?" she asks, almost sweetly.

"The disk."

She opens her eyes wide, now--the colorlessness didn't settle as she aged, and can be disturbing when she wants it to be. "What disk?"

"We are not doing this, Eight Ninety-Six. Where is my disk?" The Developer folds his arms and stares at her over his glasses.

She stares right back. "You won't find it. Not unless you do something for me."

"This is not a negotiation, Eight Ninety-Six."

"Then you'll never see your precious disk again."

"I'll make you spend all day in the pool," he shoots back.

A flicker of fear, and she deflates. Despite the fact there is no evidence of real harm, she never lost that childhood aversion. "It's behind the panel in the wall. Under my nest." She slumps off and hides under her bed, and, as he retrieves the disk, he almost--but not quite--feels guilty.

13. battle
2/14/20--
Subject: #571896-
Entry: 436
Status: Aggressive

Subject has become increasingly combative, particularly with The Developer. As her early, inconclusive data indicated, she far exceeds the average sixteen-year-old human of comparable mass in strength. She pushed The Developer through a wall yesterday. He insisted on returning to her regardless. He seems to be becoming somewhat obsessed with this particular project, though other, more useful, more docile hybrids have been produced that would benefit more from his attention.

3. air force

"You can't do that again, Eight Ninety-Six," he says, deceptively calm.

"I keep telling you. If you want me to do things, you have to give me something in return."

"And I keep telling you, you can't push people through walls when you don't get your way."

"You're the one who puts me in the pool when I don't do what you want," she snaps back.

He rubs idly at his shoulder--ironically, fixed with medical tech developed from her skin. "You don't even tell me what you want."

"I want to go outside." She lays it out before him almost triumphantly, and he winces.

"You can't."

"Then I'll keep breaking things," she said, flatly. "Either I go outside or you won't get anything from me again ever."

"It doesn't work like that, Eight Ninety-Six."

"It does now."

9. attack

Subject: #571896-
Entry: 440
Status: Apathetic

Subject has begun a pattern of mute resistance. Rather than a relief, this has proven to be a significant obstacle, more so than her aggressive retaliations were. Her pre-natal promise of medical achievement seems to finally be bearing out. So long as she remains uncooperative, her mute refusal translates to her physical form. We cannot penetrate her skin for blood draws, and any other scans come out muddled. The Developer offers no solutions. There is some concern whether or not he should be pulled from the project entirely.

14. armstice

"You can't tell anyone about this," he says, pushing on the lock until it gives.

She nods, wordless. He leads her outside--he disabled the cameras before pulling her, of course; removing any subject from its authorized areas is a serious breach of protocol.

She steps into the light and closes her eyes and smiles.

"You'll cooperate with the tests now?"

"Yes," she whispers, and "Thank you."

Entry: 445
Status: Alarming

Subject's sudden turnaround bears serious investigation, but nothing has turned up. The recent discovery of her will-powered physicality has produced amazing, and somewhat frightening, data. She is, it seems, capable of rearranging her body to suit the needs of the moment, likely explaining why none of these traits showed up on early scans. It is not the belief at this time that she can be held much longer. A discussion must be held without delay as to how to proceed.

6. d-day

The Developer knows his options are very limited at this juncture. She is his first success, his constant trial, his beautiful creation. The Directors want to redact her, and he knows they'll be gentle about it, mix something in with her evening meal, most likely. That way they can be sure she won't fight it off. A part of him agrees with them on the necessity, and he knows that, intrinsically, little will be lost--they did achieve significant data and one or two immediately usable medical breakthroughs. Besides, if he created her once, a being like her can be created again, perhaps with a more docile personality, or when the Institute is better-equipped to handle her abilities. But something inside him feels sick at the thought.

He could help her escape, but that would mean redaction himself. There's no one outside the Institute who would miss him, but even worse would be the possibility of erasing his memories and placing him--probably, at his age, and with the amount he'd need to forget, in a nursing home...

He has seen so much, encountered so much, created so much--Eight Ninety-Six and dozens of other successful hybrids, more than half living past their first year--that he can't bear the thought of forgetting it all. Not even for her.

He lets her go without her cleansing tonight. It's his way of saying goodbye.

A sad ending, but inevitable if there was no one willing to disregard orders. I am curious about the other hybrids, too: will they meet the same fate, or has the process been "improved" since then?
