4) Black cat
"Freya..."
Her eyes narrow when she hears the pleading tone in Rob's voice when she leaves the changing room after training. Her suspicion gets confirmed when she sees the look of utter delight on Nick's face.
"Am I going to like this?"
Nick laughs before shooting her a wink when they walk down and enter the cafeteria. It's all she really needs to know. She trusts him.
"Alright. Spill... What is it?"
Rob's smile widens when they set themselves down, ordering a drink when the waiter passes their table.
"Well, we were planning on going to the beach this weekend."
She looks at them in surprise. Never having expected this. But liking the idea immediately.
"When did you decide this?"
"Um... About ten minutes ago? Right after training, in the changing room. The ones who are sitting here all confirmed already. Nick is going to send a mail to those absent today and the ones from the other training's day. And we still needed to ask you and the other girls."
Rob looks from her to the other girls. Freya wonders why he is looking so nervous.
"I'm in."
She sees the smile on Nick's face widen. "Nothing planned? No dancing? No swimming?"
A quick shake of her head. "No, an entire free weekend. Luckily."
The guys around the table all nod. "Indeed. Otherwise you couldn't join us to the beach..."
Freya laughs and gently punches the girl next to her on the arm.
"You coming?"
"I can't. Every weekend but this one. I'm sorry..."
The other girls shake their heads in denial as well. It makes Freya pout playfully.
"Oi. You girls leaving me all alone the entire weekend with all these guys?"
It ears her some giggles from the girls and frowns from the boys.
"Alright. I'm looking forward to the weekend guys. But, I still have one question. It's but a tiny whiny detail, really... But, where are we going to stay?"
Rob raises his glass. "No worries there. Because Freya, it is indeed but a tiny whiny detail. My uncle has an apartment at the beach, and I know it is free this weekend, so..."
Freya laughs and everybody raises their glasses in answer.
"To an awesome weekend!"
Everybody looks aside in surprise when they hear Rob squeal all of a sudden. Laughing when they see the black cat of the owners of the cafeteria sitting on his lap. Freya quickly makes some cooing noises to make the cat walk over to her. Knowing Rob doesn't like cats. At all...
2) Jack o’Lantern
Freya smiles when the doorbell rings for the fifth time that evening.
“Hello.”
“Hey Freya!”
The cheerful voices of Chris and Rob. The last two have finally arrived.
“Come on up guys, you know the way.”
She walks back in the living room, leaving the front door open.
“So, they finally arrived.”
Nick shakes his head when he takes a look at his watch.
“That’s half an hour late guys, we are nearly finished already.”
The expression on Rob’s face makes them all laugh.
“Oh. You are mean Nick!”
Still giggling Freya turns to the last two. “Don’t worry. We haven’t started yet. Come on in, take a seat, and a pumpkin, and tell me what you want to drink.”
They both ask for some fruit juice and quickly set themselves down at the table.
They work in silence for a while. Focused on scooping the pumpkin. Music playing in the background – something Italian.
“So, just us? Ten of the entire club? No one else who will join us to the beach tomorrow?”
Chris shakes his head. “No. Just the ten of us here present.”
“And you the only girl Freya.”
If she didn’t know him better, she’d say there was pity in Rob’s voice.
“I’ve been the only girl at training for years. So don’t worry about me. I can handle it.”
They laugh and continue carving faces in the pumpkins.
“Dear Lord, what are you going to do with all this pumpkin?”
Freya jerks her head towards the kitchen. “Well, you guys are all staying for dinner. It’s a Pumpkin menu for this evening.”
10) Parentalia
They meet up at 5pm, Friday evening. Out of all the members of their club, only 10 could make it. Freya doesn't really mind. It are the best who are coming along after all.
Rob and Freya decided to drive. It was easiest seeing they are the only ones with a driver's license who actually own a car.
"Guys, do you mind if I put the CD of Sonata Arctica on?"
Next to her, Nick enthusiastically shakes his head. It makes her smile. Of course she knows he loves the band. Loves it just as much as she does.
"I don't know them, but, why not. If the two of you like them, it can't be bad..."
Nick laughs when he hears the unspoken meaning.
"Watch it guys. I'm not the only one loving metal. Freya does as well."
She smiles while turning the music a little louder. Both she and Nick singing along.
The others stay silent for the first half of the ride.
"Hey guys, are you alright back there?"
She looks at them in the rearview mirror. Before looking sideways to Nick.
"We did pick them up, didn't we?"
They all laugh and it seems to be the first time she hears them today.
“Sorry guys. I just... It’s the time of the year. The end of October. The beginning of November. All the days about remembering the dead… My family is… well, perhaps religious is the wrong word, but you know what I mean. And every year again, around these days, everything changes. They remember the people we love that died.”
Freya stays silent. Concentrated on the road and the traffic, but casting some glances backwards every now and then.
“And I know probably everybody here does this. But. My parents.”
He shakes his head.
Nick turns around. “Is it so different from us? We all remember them these days. October 31st. November 1st. November 2nd. It’s the time of the year, as you said.”
Chris smiles. “Those three days. That’s normal. My parents make it a kind of festival. I know it sounds cheerful, but it’s sober, really. And it lasts nine days. And I’m missing the highlights because of this weekend to the beach. Mum wasn’t exactly pleased. But…”
Everybody nods. Knowing exactly how Chris feels. Being old enough to make his own decisions – and needing to make him own decisions - but still feeling as if disappointing your parents by doing so.
“But it’s going to be okay. Don’t worry. I just…”
“Had to adjust to the thought and the feelings?”
Chris smiles. “Something like that. But I’m really looking forward to this weekend.”
13) Mask
Freya is sitting on the couch. Pen and paper on her lap. Everybody knows by now that she loves to write. As soon as she finds a free moment, you can find her somewhere, scribbling things down.
Nick silently enters the room. Signaling the others to be quiet so as not to warn Freya.
He knows how concentrated she is when she is writing. How easily she gets lost in that little world. Fantasy world.
The others immediately know what he’s up to when they see him sneak up on her from behind. The mask on his face.
He moves his face in her vision when he touches her arm. A yelp escapes her when she feels his cold fingers and sees the scary mask.
She lets her arm swing and hits Nick against the side of his head. His reaction too slow because of the laughter he can’t hold back.
“Oh you!!”
One of her hands rests on her chest, covering her pounding heart. The other takes the mask of his face. Looking straight into that pair of mischievous eyes she has come to love.
“I’ll get you back for that one. Believe me. I will get you back.”
The smile he shoots her tells her he’s looking forward to it.
3) Trick-or-treat
Freya is the one who opens the door when the first bunch of kids ring.
The yelled “Trick-or-treat” echoes through the apartment. And she smiles when she sees the costumes. A skeleton. Frankenstein. A ghost. And a monster she can’t name.
“Lovely. Just a second. I’ll go get some sweets.”
She can hear the exciting chatter of the kids when she returns to the living room. Can see the longing looks on the faces of the guys from ju-jitsu.
“Here you are guys. Have fun this evening!”
The kids wave when they walk away and Freya laughs when she closes the door. It makes the other look at her in surprise.
“Guys, really. You’ve been scooping out pumpkins and carving faces in them the entire afternoon yesterday. They are ready to be used… Why aren’t we out there? Dressed up and yelling trick-or-treat?”
The looks they shoot her, make her laugh. Nick is the first to stand up and walk to his room though. The others follow swiftly. Almost running. Freya shakes her head and walks over to her own room. Taking out her own costume. It has been a while ago since she last did something silly like this. She’s going to enjoy herself, roaming the streets with these guys.
8) All Hallows’ Eve
Their laughter echoes over the streets. They get weird looks from some - seeing they’re two heads too tall compared to the other children that are out tonight. Others just smile and remember their own silly escapades and just want to be able to do it all again as well.
“Halloween. I kinda really like this evening.”
Chris smiles when Rob and three others run to the next house. Grinning like little kids when they knock on the door.
“Does anyone really know where it comes from? All Hallows’ Eve? I’ve always heard it was Pagan. That it came from the Celts. But I know there are other who are convinced it has pure Christian roots.”
Nick pulls up his shoulders when he hears Freya’s question.
“Well, my parents are deeply convinced of the last option. And they really shiver at all this Halloween and Trick-and-Treat-thing. It has nothing to do anymore with the original thought – remembering the dead. And honoring them. Personally though, after having read quite a lot of articles about the subject, I think it’s more a Pagan-thing. Indeed Celtic.”
There is a glint of amazement in Chris his eyes when he looks at Freya.
“But then again. Perhaps it is a mix of the two. And probably we will never know for sure. Does it even matter?”
Freya shakes her head and links her right arm with Nick and her left with Chris. Ignoring their surprised looks.
“No. It doesn’t. I was just wondering. That’s all.”
“We got a lot! Even those really yummy new chocolates.”
Rob’s enthusiastic reaction makes them smile. The subject dropped when they walk back to the apartment. They leave the jack o’lanterns at the front door. Decorating the building.
1) Samhain
She looks up, surprised, when she hears the door of a bedroom open.
“You’re still awake?”
Chris sets himself down on the couch next to her.
“Yeah, I couldn’t sleep. And the couch is much more comfortable to write than my bed, so…”
Freya puts down her pen and looks at him.
“Are you alright?”
He nods. Not completely convinced. “Yeah. I am. It’s just… Something you said earlier today. About All Hallows’ Eve.”
A questioning look.
“About it being a Pagan festival. Celtic.”
Freya nods. “Yeah. What about it?”
It makes Chris shake his head.
“Nothing special. I was just wondering how you knew about that. Most of the people I know… I mean. They don’t know about that part. They all think it is either Christian or a stupid American thing without meaning. No one ever…”
She smiles and puts the pen and paper on the table before pulling her legs up beneath her. Wrapping a blanket around her shoulders.
“My mother is obsessed about the Celtic culture. So I know quite a big deal about it. It’s a fascinating culture. I love reading about it as well.”
Chris stays silent for a while and she watches him. Just a little worried.
“Can I borrow some of your books?”
Freya wonders why that question seems to pose him such trouble. Wonders why this conversation makes him nervous.
“My mother told me the basics and I've read some articles. But, as I said, she is very strict. And doesn't like me reading about anything else. But the Celts. They have always fascinated me. Captured my interest. And I’d love to know more about them. Read more about it.”
She nods. “Sure. I’ll bring some books with me next training.”
Chris bites his lips for a second. “Can you start with one book?”
She nods again before placing a hand on his shoulder. “Chris. You are not betraying your mother by wanting to know more about something she can’t fit in her views.”
The boy shakes his head. “I know. And it’s not about betraying. It’s just…”
“Feeling as if you disappoint her.”
He looks away, eyes downcast. “Yes. Exactly that.”
5) All Saints’ Day
They are walking on the beach the next morning, right after breakfast. Shivering Freya puts her hands in her pockets, pulling up her shoulders so she can hide her head in her jacket.
"Cold?"
She nods. "Yes, a little bit."
Smiling she sees how Nick comes closer, walking right next to her. "Come here."
He opens his arms and she gladly walks into the embrace. Her arms around his waist, his around her shoulders.
She giggles after a couple of seconds, letting her head rest against his chest.
"What? What is so funny?"
Freya shakes her head. "I like this. But, it's not an easy way to walk."
It makes Nick laugh as well. She's glad he doesn't comment on her 'I like this.' Neither of them lets go for the moment though.
"Guys, race till the next pillar?"
Most of them immediately agree. Only Chris and Nick and Freya continue walking. They smile at seeing the others act so childishly.
"Normally I'd go visit my grandparent's graves today. Clean it up and lay flowers. And now I am here. At the beach. And actually I feel like running with them. And laughing so hard it hurts. It's... strange."
Freya looks at Chris, not with sympathy in her eyes – she knows he’d hate her for that - but she understands perfectly.
"Same her. I’d go to the grave of my great-aunt and -uncle. And a friend who died too early. And I’d place a light at their graves. It is strange indeed not to do so today."
She can read the questions in Chris his eyes. Can see the surprise on his face when he notices Nick doesn't react to it at all. But of course Nick knows.
"I agree on the feeling strange part. Perhaps we should do it when we get back home."
Freya and Chris smile. Of course they'd go visit the graves when they are back home.
"Why don't we join the others now? I actually feel like running as well."
There is a challenging look in her eyes when she looks at the two guys. They easily accept it.
She is laughing when they reach the pillar where the others are waiting for them. Of course Chris and Nick arrived before her. She knows though that Nick let Chris win, slowing down a little for her.
It makes her wonder why he does such stupid little things. It makes her wonder why it makes her feel special...
"When you said we should visit the graves when we get back home. Did you mean together?"
There is a strange look in his eyes - one she can't name - when he answers. "Yeah, why not?"
14) Ghoul
They are sitting on a covered terrace. Enjoying a hot choco, in Freya's case. Or coffee for the others. And a waffle. Or pancakes.
A healthy blush on their cheeks. They feel like they are glowing because of all the running and rolling over the sand.
"Look at that."
Rob smiles when he points to the kids walking in. All still dressed up. A skeleton, a ghost, Frankenstein. And a monster. An unknown monster. They enjoy the attention they draw when they set themselves at a table. Waving at their mothers who are sitting a table further.
Freya turns around, addressing them.
"Why are you still dressed up? That was for last night, no?"
Of course she remembers them. It were the kids who rang at their door. It were them that inspired her to get the entire gang out of the apartment and join the trick-or-treat themselves.
The Frankenstein kid smiles when he recognizes her. "Because it is fun."
His enthusiasm is catching and it makes her giggle. She turns her gaze to the youngster dressed as a monster.
"What are you? Just a monster? Or..."
The kid shakes his head indignantly. "I am not just a Monster. I am a Ghoul..."
He lets the words hang in the air. Paused for a dramatic effect. Looking at the faces of the others around her table, Freya notices he succeeds.
"And I am craving human flesh..."
Spoken in a low and hushed voice. Threatening. Eyes narrowed and a cruel smile on his lips.
"A pancake will satisfy your hunger as well I presume?"
The waitress smiles at him when he smiles broadly and nods enthusiastically. Immediately dropping the act and enjoying the pancakes.
11) Souling
"That Ghoul Monster kid was cute."
Rob laughs when he recalls the look on his face when he saw the pancakes.
"He was indeed. And somehow, though I'm sure none of you will find the link, it reminded me of an old habit. A habit no one does anymore, I think. One no one knows anymore. Souling."
Freya nods while the others turn questioning gazes towards Chris.
"Souling? It sounds creepy..."
The shiver Nick allows into his voice, makes her smile.
"Not at all. Sad perhaps. And respectful. Children and poor people would sing and say prayers for the dead in return for cakes. Soulcakes."
6) Day of the dead
In some parts of the world has started the festival Day of the Dead. There are colorful parades and people gathering at graveyards to pray for the deceased.
Freya looks up to the television when she hears the newsreader.
"The Day of the Dead. Isn't it custom to make little shrines - private altars - to honor the dead? And to bring gifts to the graves?"
Chris nods. "You really are well informed about all this."
She smiles. "Blame my mother. She feels very strongly about this time of the year. Just like yours. But mine considers every possible aspect. And she absolutely adores the influence of the American Halloween."
Chris smiles. "It sure sounds interesting. Does she decorate her house? With pumpkins and witches and spiders and cobwebs?"
The question makes Nick laugh. "Oh yes, her mother changes the entire house. It's great actually to walk around there."
She can see the looks on their faces and nods already before Rob can ask the question.
"Alright. You are all invited once we get back home to come and visit."
The cheers from the guys make her smile.
7) Bonfires
Freya is standing in front of the window. The stars are shining brightly and the dark of the night makes her smile. For no reason. She wouldn't be able to explain it if someone asks.
"You know what would be totally awesome?"
She looks behind her, where the others are lying sprawled over the couches and the floor.
"Going to the beach and making a fire."
Rob smiles innocently when he sees the look on her face.
"Oh come on Freya. That would be so very cool."
She shakes her head. "Let's go then."
Laughing softly she sets herself down between them. Their mouths dropped open in surprise at her answer. Never having expected her to agree. They had all counted on a reprimand or a preach to hold them back.
"You mean that?"
Freya rolls her eyes. "What? Am I your mother now? Telling you what and what not to do? How can I forbid you guys from going outside and making a bonfire? And why the hell do I get the feeling you would have actually listened if I had?"
Nick laughs before getting up. Holding out his hand to her, pulling her up when she takes it.
"Let's go?"
Everyone nods and they stumble over one other in their hurry to get up. They bump into Freya in their enthusiasm. Making her lose her balance. Luckily Nick is there to catch her. His arms around her are safe and warm and she wants to stay in them. Hide and forget the world.
Her head against his chest and she takes in the smell that is so typically him. Her eyes closed for a second and she wonders why he doesn’t let her go.
She quickly pulls always when the others arrive back.
It's but a five minute walk from the apartment to the beach but seeing they still have to assemble wood, it takes them nearly half an hour.
Another quarter later and they have the fire burning. They are sitting before it. Huddled together. And it is a perfect excuse to crawl closer to Nick. The perfect excuse to sit close to him.
The guys are talking and laughing and Freya listens but stays silent. The warmth of the fire makes her sleepy and she lets her head rest on Nick's shoulder. Without hesitation he shifts a little and puts his arm around her shoulder.
She’s too tired to wonder about hidden meanings and hints. She just wants to be close to him.
20) Apple bobbling
They clap their hands when Nick is the first one to surface with an apple clenched between his teeth. He grimaces when he spits it out again. His hands are still tied behind his back. To prevent cheating.
"Gosh, this tastes foul."
Freya nods when she walks over to untie his hands.
"Apples and seawater. Not a good combination at all."
Chris walks out of the sea. His hands tied as well.
"No, no good combination. Really, why couldn't we have just used a tub with normal water and play this game like normal people play it?"
The comment results in 9 questioning look directed towards Rob. He just smiles innocently and pulls up his shoulders.
"Because this is much more fun. Certainly your reactions afterwards."
Nick cracks his fingers and Freya catches his look. Immediately she understands what he wants to say.
"But you haven't played this yet..."
There is an evil glint in their eyes when they approach Rob. They see him swallow and take a step back.
"Don't dare to run away Rob. You know Nick is faster than you and he shows no pity after a hunt."
Rob turns his head to look at her. "And you're speaking out of experience of him chasing you?"
His words startle her and she can see the same shocked look on Nick's face. The comment wasn't meant to hurt, just to give him a head start for running, but it still hits her like a hammer.
Of course Nick quickly runs after him. Not intending on letting Rob escape the game. Just a couple of minutes later he has bound Rob's arms behind his back.
"Go on, go fish for an apple."
The guys are laughing. And Freya is as well. But she avoids Nick's eyes. Knowing the comment has stirred feelings inside she'd rather keep hidden from him. At least for now. Until she knows what he feels. Until she is sure. The hugs and him seeking out her company are hints enough, but... She doesn't want to end up heartbroken again. Has misread these actions before. She doesn’t want to risk it again.
9) Pomona
For a change the guys are ready before Freya is. The luggage is already standing in the hallway and they are sitting on the couch, waiting for her to appear so they can go homewards.
“Sorry to have kept you waiting. I’m ready.”
She quickly exits her room, taking a bite from the apple she is holding and walks with her bag to the hallway. Looking back she sees them all still sitting on the couch, staring at her. She holds our her hands.
“What? Come on. Let’s go. You were all complaining that it took me so long. So now I’m here. Let’s go…”
They get up, looking at each other before following her, taking the luggage and walking to the garage where their cars are waiting.
It doesn’t take long before everything is ready. Without it needing to be said or asked, the same groups are formed.
Freya winks to Rob when he and the four others gets in his car and they leave.
“Okay guys. Get in.”
Nick sets himself next to the driver’s place. Chris waits before getting in. It makes Freya look up to him.
“Is everything alright?”
Chris nods and shoots her a smile. “Everything is fine. I just wanted you to know that you look beautiful.”
Her eyes open wide and for a moment she doesn’t know what to say.
“I think this is the first time I see you in a dress. And… You look really beautiful.”
She can feel the blush creeping over her face.
“You know. You actually remind me of a Roman Goddess.”
That comment is enough to make her find her words again. Breaking the tension that perhaps only she feels.
“Don’t be silly Chris. Roman Goddesses don’t wear long sleeves.”
He laughs softly and steps in the car. Freya follows few seconds later. Sees the questioning look on Nick’s face. And the little glitter of jealousy in his eyes when he notices the blush on her cheeks. Or perhaps that is just her imagination.
She shakes her head. It probably is just her imagination.
Turning she winks at Chris. “Thank you though.”
And once more she thinks she sees a flash of jealousy when she looks at Nick again. It makes her wonder. And hope… And all she really wants to do is take his face in her hands and kiss him.
She had never expected to fall for him this badly.
16) Candles
Surprised she looks up from the book she is reading when she hears her doorbell ring.
“Hello?”
“It’s Nick.”
Her eyes open wide when she opens the door and tells him to come in. He arrives at her apartment just a couple of seconds later.
“Hey Freya.”
He quickly kisses her cheek before stepping inside. He doesn’t catch her questioning look when he sets himself on the couch after having kicked off his shoes and taken off his coat and scarf.
“I’m not disturbing you, am I?”
She shakes her head, indicating the book lying open on the table. “No, I was just reading.”
He smiles and she wonders what made him this happy.
“Do you have any plans this evening?”
Freya shakes her head once more and Nick stands up again.
“Perfect.” Taking her hands in his, he drags her to the hallway. Putting his shoes back on and taking his coat.
“Come with me?”
And this time he does catch the questioning look she shoots him.
“Nick. We came home from the sea yesterday evening. I’ve been working today. I’ve just finished my dinner. What…?”
Freya does not need to finish her question.
“Trust me. Please.”
She bites her lower lip and closes her eyes when he gives her the puppy look. It’s a sight she can’t refuse, can’t deny, and he damn well knows it.
It’s only when she gets downstairs to take her bike that she notices the plastic bag in his hands. Turning her head she wants to ask what is in it, but he shakes his head even before she can open her mouth.
Rolling her eyes, but smiling, she takes her bike out of the garage.
“Okay. Ready.”
All the way, Nick is chatting happily. Of course she joins him. His joy works addicting.
Twenty minutes later she looks around carefully. Her eyes narrowing for a second when she recognizes the environment. Nick is still talking, going on and on, acting as if he hasn’t noticed the change in her behavior. He watches her cautiously. Immediately spotting the small smile gracing her lips when she realizes.
Their eyes meet when they get off their bike at the entrance of the graveyard.
“You meant it. You actually meant it…”
For a second he can’t tell if she’s happy or upset. But then she smiles at him. That one honest smile and before he knows it, she’s hugging him.
“Thank you. I… didn’t really want to go alone…”
Carefully he wraps his own arms around her. Standing close to one other for a couple of minutes. Before, finally, Freya steps away. Both their arms falling limply at their sides.
“Come on.”
They walk in silence. Freya leading the way to the graves of her great-aunt and great-uncle. Her hands balled to fists when she stands before them. Not hearing Nick taking something out of the plastic bag.
It’s only when she sees a light out of the corner of her eyes that she looks at him.
“You said you put lights at their graves, didn’t you?”
She can hear the uncertainty in his voice. Wondering if he made the right decision to bring lights instead of flowers.
Freya nods. Blinking to keep a couple of tears from escaping her eyes.
He hands her the light and takes a step back. Offering her some privacy to pray for her family.
Closing her eyes, her hands holding the light, she calls back memories of her aunt. Sweet lovely aunt, always baking cookies and reading bedtime stories. And her uncle. Smelling of the garden he always worked in. And peppermint. All three of them, playing board games.
After a couple of minutes she places the light on the tombstone.
“Can I have another one?”
Without a word Nick lights a second one. She places it next to the first. Two persons. Two lights.
He holds out the last light when she stands up again. Her hands are trembling when she accepts it.
“Thank you.”
Smiling he puts his arm around her and together they walk to the last grave. And this time Freya cannot hold back the tears.
“I still miss him. It’s been seven years. And still. Every time again. And it are simple things. Little things. Things I think he’d have loved or reacted to. And I…”
Her voice breaks and she softly curses herself. Feeling the comforting hand of Nick on her shoulder.
“When was the last time you cried for him? For yourself?”
Surprised she looks up at him.
“Last year when I visited his grave.”
Her tone is defying. It doesn’t impress Nick though.
She continues in a much softer voice. “At night sometimes. When it just becomes too much.”
“And when was the last time you let anyone see that? When was the last time you allowed anyone to comfort you?”
His words strike like lightning and she flinches because of the truth in them.
Quickly she turns away, looking at the tombstone of her friend. They shared everything. Their bond running deep. And then she was left alone…
She sets herself on her knees before the grave. Placing the candle down.
“I miss you guy.”
When she stands up again, still not facing him, her hands take a hold of his coat and she lets her forehead rest against his chest. The movement surprises Nick more than he shows. And for a moment he doesn’t know how to react. They stand there like that for a couple of seconds, before he carefully, gently, places his hands on her upper arms. Rubbing gently.
“Come. Let’s go home.”
She lets go of him and shakes her head. “Your grandparents. Are they here as well?”
He nods and Freya wipes away the tears. Trying to smile reassuringly. Trying to smile bravely. “Lead the way…”
Without it needing to be said, she knows it means a lot to him that she still wants to go with him. But it is the least she can do. After all her did for her tonight.
12) Witch
"Ohayo Okaasan. Hey dad."
Smiling Freya enters the house of her parents. Giving both her parents a quick kiss before walking over to the window that's looking over the garden. The dog is barking happily while chasing the birds.
"The house looks amazing mum."
Her eyes wander around. Easily spotting the cobwebs all over the ceiling and the furniture. Little black spiders, little bats, pumpkins, a witch greeting you at the door.
"I've always wondered. Why your interest in this? In this world of Halloween?"
Risa simply shakes her head and looks around at the world she created especially for this time of the year.
"I don't know. I just... I love decorating with funny stuff. It gives the heaviness of these days a lighter touch."
Freya walks over to the witch hidden between the wall and the cupboard. Pressing her hand. The witch's laughter always makes her smile.
"It's like I can't explain my fascination for the Celts. It's so interesting. That culture. And Halloween, it's interesting to see how other people celebrate it. Deal with it."
Of course her daughter hears what her mother doesn't voice.
Dealing with loss and grief and remembering. Dealing with honoring the dead.
Freya doesn't look away when their eyes lock. And once again she can read the question clearly.
Are you dealing with it?
Smiling she walks over to her mother. Hugging her. It's all the answer she needs. They set themselves down on the couch with a glass of wine and some crisps.
"I am alright mum. Really. I have my two best friends and..."
She stays silent for a while. Her eyes fixed on something in the distance. Something that isn't there.
"Nick helped me a lot yesterday."
Quickly she tell her parents about them visiting the graves.
"You really do love that guy, don't you?"
Blushing she looks away. Of course she told her mother how she felt towards Nick. Told her the moment she found out herself. She tells her mother everything. Needs to tell someone all that lives inside her. Because sometimes it just is too much.
"And, according to everything you've told me about him, I think he loves you as well..."
Freya shakes her head. "No, it's just like Thomas. We're just really good friends. Nothing more."
The look on Risa's face tells her she doesn't believe it.
"Really. He's not in love with me. Or he would have said something by now. And I probably exaggerate when I tell you about things we do or say. Because I'm just hoping he returns my feelings and it is that hope – that fantasy – that makes it sound more special than it actually is."
The warm hand atop of her own make her stop. She takes a quick deep breath. Of course they see the tears in her eyes.
"Perhaps he's just scared. Just like you. Perhaps you should tell him what you feel."
Freya closes her eyes. Smiles reassuringly.
"Perhaps."
It’s a clear end to the conversation and all of them stay silent for a while.
Freya's sudden giggling makes them look up in surprise.
"I just remember. The guys from ju-jitsu, the ones who went to the beach last weekend, wanted to see the house now you've decorated it. Is it okay if they pass by either this evening or tomorrow?"
Her mother nods. She loves getting guests when she has transformed the house.
"Tomorrow? After your training?"
She leans over and hugs her.
"Perfect! Thanks mum!"
18) Occult
"Your mum is awesome for inviting us to dinner after training so we can see the decorated house!"
They are all cycling towards the house of Freya's parents. Slowly. Training was intensive.
"Yeah, she is."
There is something in her voice that makes Nick look at her in surprise. No one else notices it though. The smile she flashes him, is enough to warn him. After all, he knows her mother.
It's only ten minutes later that they arrive at the house. And it stands out immediately. The jack o'lanterns on the doorstep. The skeleton against the door itself. The cobwebs and plastic spiders in the bushes. The bats on the upper windows.
Everybody looks up in surprise and awe. "And it is like that in the entire house?"
Freya giggles while pressing the doorbell. Even that has been adapted. The cackling of a witch echoing through the house. It makes the guys burst out laughing.
The door creaks when it slowly opens. Suspicious eyes peeping outside. Black hair. Messy. A wart at the side of her nose.
Some take a step back when the doors opens completely and reveals an old woman, leaning on a stick. The black robe she is wearing torn at the end. Nails painted just as black. She beckons them in without a word, hands wrinkled. Enjoying the looks of shock on their faces. Taking in the wide open eyes and mouths.
Freya rolls her eyes and shakes her head. But she is smiling when she steps forward and enters the house, kissing the woman's cheek.
"Konbanwa Okaasan."
It makes her mother smile, making the severe look disappear. Risa stands up straight when Nick enters as well.
"Good evening Risa-san."
He leans over and kisses her cheek as well. Freya's parents know him well enough.
"Good evening Nick. Go on in, you'll be surprised at what I did this year."
The chuckle that escapes her sounds more like the witch she is pretending to be than her greeting.
Cheerfully she waves the other guys in. "Come on in guys. Dinner is waiting for you."
The sentence has just left her lips when she hears Nick and Freya laugh.
"Mum, you don't mean that."
In the middle of the laid out table stands a black cauldron. Steaming.
"Risa, you are priceless."
Nick turns around. Giving Freya's mother a thumb up.
Smiling Freya's father, dressed up as a skeleton, fills the plates on the table.
"Pumpkin soup to start with. Pasta bolognaise to follow and something special for dessert."
The others still don't know what to say when they set themselves down. Never having expected such a show.
19) Scary movies
Nick and Freya are cycling home together. The other guys needing to go the other way to get home.
"Your mother is amazing. Really. Tonight was awesome."
She laughs. "Yeah. She is. And yeah, I had a great time as well."
Luckily the others loosened up soon enough. And the evening was filled with chatting and laughing and telling horror stories and trying to scare one other.
"Rob was complaining in the changing room after training, that we didn't see any scary movie at Halloween."
Freya pulls up her shoulders. "I prefer trick-or-treat-ing over scary movies."
Nick looks aside. "I said we could meet up again this weekend. If I recall well you said you had no plans yet for Saturday evening..."
She can hear his question even before he says it.
"Alright. You can all come over to my place for some late scary-Halloween-movies. But... You guys bring the movies."
Nick nods enthusiastically. "Deal."
15) Goblin
Rob is the last one to arrive Saturday evening. Bringing with him the last movie they wanted to see.
The table is filled with crisps and chocolate and sweets and all kind of drinks. Freya is not like her mother, but she has inherited some of Risa's sense of entertainment.
Luckily there is nothing on the faces of the others that might betray anything to Rob.
"Hi guys. Everything okay? Ready for a night filled with eeriness?"
They nod enthusiastically and shift on the couch, making place for him to sit down as well. Rob doesn't notice the anticipating looks the others shoot him.
The moment Rob sets himself down, it triggers a little mechanism behind the couch. A high yelp escapes him when he feels the creature touch his neck and face and arms.
He is so startled that the others burst out laughing just by the look on his face. Freya bends over, her hands on her knees, supporting her. "Rob. Your face. You should have seen your face."
Carefully Nick untangles the green plushy creature from the mechanism. Putting it on his lap, petting its head.
"Oh, you are a good boy. Yes, such a good boy. Scaring the hell out of Rob..."
Rob lets his arm swing, hitting Nick's shoulder. "You guys are evil."
He soon joins their laughter though.
17) Harvest
She whistles when she walks across the street towards her home. Having just passed by her parents’ place. She swings the plastic bag she is carrying. Her mother insisted she’d take some of the apples from their garden with her. Freya isn’t one to say ‘no’ to gifts.
Smiling she takes an apple out of the bag, tossing it up and neatly catching it again.
It tastes perfect when she takes the first bite. A bit of juice trickles down her chin and she laughs when she wipes it away.
Things grown in the garden of her parents always taste best.

But Rob, why don't you like cats? *is cat-lover and doesn't understand*
Ahaha, the little kid dressed up as a ghoul was utterly adorable <3 Luckily he preferred pancakes over human flesh ^_~ Mmmm pancakes.
I liked it when Chris gave Freya a compliment and Nick was a little jealous, of course he was. Please let him make up his mind somewhere before the end of 'Circle Never Ends'... and he knows what I want him to decide *threatens Nick with a spoon*
Yup, Risa was wonderful! She's a great character and I hope we'll see more of her in this storyline.
...
And bobbing apples in the sea? Remember me to pass that one should you ever ask. *grimaces* Apple with salt x_X
Little note, you've twice typed 'craving faces in the pumpkins' and I think you meant carving'

I'm really glad you like this. I was so in the Halloween mood that the words just .. came. :-)
As for Rob... I know, right? I'm a cat-lover myself, so... *shakes head*
Pancakes. I mean, come on. No one can resist pancakes. XD
As for Nick making up his mind, continue reading on what has been posted already, and you'll find out. :-)
can you threaten the real one as well? :pRisa! I truely like Risa! *giggles* She's so amazing. ^^
I am never going to ask bobbing apples in the sea. Ew... *shivers at the thought*
