She takes a deep breath when she stands at the edge of the lake. Bracing herself for the cold water. Smiling she runs forward. The water splashing all around.

Shivering she dives under. Laughing when she surfaces again and throws her head backwards. Her long black hair making drops of water flying all around.

She has always loved this lake. Always come here when she visits Japan. Always. At least once. The place has something… Sacred. Something tranquil and peaceful. It’s the perfect place to swim without being disturbed. The perfect place to come to when something bothers you and you need to think calmly.

In the middle of the lake, is an island. No one lives there. The rocks are too sharp and everything is covered with plants and trees. And still, there is a statue at the edge. It reminds her of Poseidon. Without trident. But still.

A bird cries above her and she looks up. Her eyes widening when she sees the clouds. A pattern of pouches underneath the normal clouds. She knows what it predicts. A severe thunderstorm.

Quickly she swims back to the shore. She hears the voices when she takes her towel. They are speaking very quickly. Her Japanese is good enough to be able to understand them though.

Freya rolls her eyes when she hears the sexist remarks about women. They seem to think it very funny.

“Hey. Look at that. Our hunt might not be doomed after all. I guess we might still be lucky…”

She turns her head. Four young guys are staring at her. She feels vulnerable under their hungry stares with only her swimming suit on.

Seemingly not affected at all, she walks away. Of course they follow her, joking around about what they’d do when they capture her, not realizing she understands their every word.

It makes her shiver and she walks a little faster, body tense and everything inside her focused.

“Don’t run away honey. Let’s have some fun first.”

Freya reacts completely out of instinct when one of the guys take a hold of her wrist. Without thinking she turns around, her fingers closing themselves around the wrist of the attacking hand. Pulling the arm towards the ground. Her free hand moves up towards his face, covering his nose and eyes with her fingers, and tilting the head backwards, making him lose his balance. In one swift movement she steps next to him, letting her leg closest to his swing – taking his leg out underneath him. He falls ungraciously. Never having done martial arts, his head bangs on the ground. The hand she used to tilt his head back, has moved to her side, balled to a fist, ready to punch.

She steps away from him when she sees the looks on his friends’ faces. Carefully she backs away. Hands raised in front of her. Hand palms open, a calming gesture. It’s a futile attempt and she knows it.

Bracing herself she sees one of them running towards her. His arm raised, balled fists, ready to hit her with full force.

Quickly she takes on a defensive stance. Making sure her balance is perfect. When he’s near she pulls up one knee, stretching her leg in a perfect mae geri – forward kick. Her foot connects with his abdomen, making him fall on his knees. Both his arms covering his belly and he groans. It doesn’t look as if he’ll get up soon, but she takes a couple of steps back out of safety.

Looking up, she sees the last two staring at her. Eyes and mouth wide open at seeing how their friends are lying on the ground – defeated by a foreign girl. The looks on their faces give her a strange feeling of satisfaction.

Still careful, eyes still on the four boys – she can’t bring herself to think of them as men anymore – she walks away. Never turning her back on them when she can still see them. She only turns around when she reaches the end of the forest. And even then she still looks backwards every five steps. Not once thinking she is safe until she reaches the house without another sign of them.

“Hey Freya. Had a nice swim?”

The sudden voice of Asumi scares her for a second. She smiles reassuringly when she sees the questioning and worried look on the face of her youngest niece.

“Yeah. The swim was great. Too bad I met some babies on the way back.”

Of course Asumi notices she doesn’t want to talk about it. Yet. And Freya is grateful when she doesn’t push for an explanation.

“I’m going to take a shower.”

Asumi nods and doesn’t hold her back when she walks to her room.

Freya takes a deep breath. Only now allowing herself to admit these guys scared her.

It are but a couple of minutes later, when the hot water of the shower is running over her tense body, that the storm breaks lose. The thunder rolling through the streets and the lightning following quickly.

This is a very complicated subject. I feel bad for Freya here. I'll be interested to see how it affects things later on.

Ugh, guys can be so brutal. No means no, seriously!

I like the description of the lake, too; it reminds me of Lake Biwa, in Western Japan. :)

Wow, poor Freya. I like the frame of the storm, and also, fuck those guys. Fuck them sideways.

(ps: Poseidon only has one ess in it.)
