Noah had both of his parents' wedding rings, and his mother's engagement ring. He always thought that he would meet a nice Southern girl to settle down with and give her his mama's rings, and take his daddy's ring for himself. It didn't end up like that at all, as things usually do. He met Jackson after his own daddy's death, and the idea of exchanging their fathers' rings during their wedding, as a symbol of combining their families, was fine with both of them.
His proposal hadn't been anything big or romantic. Noah wasn't one for big gestures, or big words. He preferred to think, not talk, so his words were quiet and to the point. He walked into the kitchen and found Jackson cooking supper instead of Miss June. Before she could come into the kitchen, Noah walked over to place his daddy's ring on the counter and slide it toward Jackson.
"Do you think it'll fit?" he asked quietly, feeling the heat rise up in the back of his neck.
Jackson smiled the soft smile that always made Noah's heart skip, before he slid the ring onto his finger. "I think it'll fit just fine."
Later, when they moved to New York and Noah discovered that Jackson knew Joy, he had almost panicked. It seemed like something that would lead to bad things, but it hadn't. Jackson thought it was amusing, and Joy immediately started flirting with him like she had never left Georgia. When Jackson talked to him and said that he could have a relationship with Joy as well, if he wanted, someone could have knocked him over with a feather.
It wasn't a surprise when he found himself proposing to Joy. If Chloe was Jackson's soul mate, then Joy was his. His proposal to her wasn't the same as the one Jackson received, but it was just simple, just as him.
"They belonged to my mama," he told her quietly, slipping the simple solitaire diamond ring, and solid silver band onto her finger. "I know they aren't much, or very fancy, but--"
Joy yanked him into a hard kiss before he could even finish.
One day, Chloe sat down next to him, and looked at him for so long that he finally had to be the first to talk. "Help you with something?"
"When are you going to propose to me?"
He choked on air, and it took him a moment to answer. "Beg pardon?" He knew exactly what she had said, but hopefully she would explain.
"You're married to my soul mate, and the love of my life. We get along just fine, I like you, I know we're attracted to each other. We already have sex every now and then."
"With Joy," he quietly interrupted, still stunned and wondering where this had come from.
"Still. Why shouldn't we?"
He kept staring at her. "I... don't have a ring for you."
Chloe scoffed and waved a hand. "I can handle that. So you're proposing?"
"...Yes," he said, still confused.
She beamed and quickly kissed him. "Excellent. I'll go tell Joy and Jax."
Noah stared after her as she left the room, wondering what the hell just happened.
Their little four-way marriage was mostly a secret, even if they weren't all 'official' marriages. Their friends and family knew, and they usually wouldn't care if other people knew, but Chloe had the paparazzi and her career to worry about. The people that loved them didn't care, but the media and people at large were cruel.
They didn't like keeping secrets, because Noah felt the same as Joy; he wanted to be openly proud that he loved these people, not just Jackson. But they all had each other to make things better. Each of the couples, Joy and Chloe, and Jackson and Noah had their own rooms and their own beds. But sometimes, Noah and Joy would retreat to the third bedroom that was theirs while Chloe and Jax had a slumber party. Sometimes, they would pile blankets and pillows in the middle of the living room floor and sleep together in a pile.
It wasn't the life Noah had imagined for himself when he was younger. He would have never in his wildest dreams imagined that people like Joy and Jackson and Chloe would love him, or that New York City, and a farm a few hours north of that was in his future. But, surprisingly, they were, and he wouldn't have had it any other way.
