Summary : Nick asks her to dance.
Notes : Constructive criticism is, as always, welcome.
She’s standing in front of her open bedroom window – watching the stars – when Nick enters her apartment. She trusts him enough to give him a key to the front doors. Trusts him more than enough to tell him to just enter instead of ringing the doorbell. He’s so often at her place – nearly always since the chemo started – that she could easily convince herself and everyone else that they are living together.
Her long black hair held together by a ribbon. Some lose strands that have escaped the ponytail are flying around because of the wind entering the room. Nick knows she’s wondering if she’ll lose it. It will be a blow if that happens. She’s rather proud of her hair.
From the living room he can hear a song from the Disney movie ‘The King and I’. Freya is humming along. Only one sentence she sings out loud. Every time the same sentence.
“Shall we dance. Shall we then say goodnight and mean goodbye.”
The words are sad despite the cheerful music. It’s probably why she sings them.
He wraps his arms around her. Letting her back rest against his chest. His head next to hers, his chin on her shoulder. He feels her tensing – only for a second – before she completely relaxes in his embrace.
“You okay?”
She nods. Smiles when she lets her head lean against his. Eyes closed.
Carefully he moves her around after some minutes. Taking her hand in his and guiding her to the living room. He ignores her questioning look when he shuts off the movie and puts on a CD. Freya’s eyes widen when the first notes of ‘When you taught me how to dance’ from Katie Melua echo through the living room and she sees Nick holding out his hands.
“Want to dance?”
He doesn’t wait for a reply, can see the answer in her eyes. Stepping closer he guides her arms around his neck before he lets his own arms circle around her waist. Holding her close to him. It’s the first time they’ll dance a slow together. The first time there is such close contact between them when they dance. It makes her nervous. A little. A little much.
“Relax. I’m not going to do anything.”
Surprised she looks at him. Not having noticed she was tense. There’s a blush covering her cheeks when she sees the look in his eyes. Quickly she looks away.
“Trust me.”
Freya can hear the pain in his voice and her eyes flash when she turns her head to look at him again. “Of course I trust you. There is no one else in this world I trust more than you.”
Smiling he brings one hand up again, caressing her cheek while putting a lock of hair behind her ear. Of course he hears the sharp intake of breath. And Freya knows, right now, that this will be alright. They will be alright. They will make it work and he will not let her fall. He'll stay by her side and keep his promise. And she wants him. As more than a friend. She wants his love.
"I love you Nick."
His eyes open wide in surprise. Never having expected she'd admit it out loud. Not now. Not now when the chemo has started. He knows how scared she is of losing him. Despite his reassuring answers, he knows that fear will not go away.
She smiles, shyly, and lets her head rest against his chest. Moving her arms from his neck to his waist. Holding him close – as if she never wants to let go of him – and perhaps that isn’t even a lie. It's much more comfortable dancing this way. After all, he a good head taller than she is.
Gently he places a kiss on the top of her head. It makes Freya look up again. Their eyes lock and Nick can read: the doubt, the uncertainty, the fear, the longing, the trust...
Slowly he leans down. Just a little insecure. Giving her time to back away if she wants. One of Freya’s hands travels up, cupping his head, guiding his lips to hers. She shivers when they kiss. Moans when their tongues meet. Battling. Just a little.
A soft sigh escapes her when they break apart. Her eyes still closed. Licking her lips. Before leaning her head against his chest again.
“Don’t doubt me Freya. Please. Believe me when I say I love you and I’m going to stay with you.”
She doesn’t answer. Just snuggles a little closer in his embrace.
“You know today is the Autumn equinox? The length of the day and the night is the same everywhere on earth. It’s also the day the sun rises exactly in the East. Did you know?”
Nick laughs when he tightens his hold on her. Only a little surprised by the random fact instead of an answer. It’s her way of hiding her fear and uncertainty.
“No, I didn’t know. Is it important?”
Feels how she shakes her head. Letting his fingers comb through her hair. Reassuring.
