“Nani? Are you sure? I mean, you can’t…”
Surprised Nick looks aside. The shoji not completely closed and he can see Freya and Ayame in the room. Both sitting at a low table, kneeling, a cup of tea in their hands. The look of shock is clearly visible on Ayame’s face and that is what surprises him the most. Japanese girls are very careful with showing their emotions.
“I’m sure. I am going to let some tests be taken at home to officially confirm it, but yes, I am sure…”
Freya’s gaze is fixed on the other side of the room, on the other shoji. Or was it the Fusuma? Nick still mixes all the Japanese terms.
“Let’s wait for the results of those tests then. You could always be…”
Freya shakes her head. “No. I am not mistaken. I know my body. And I still know how it feels. Even though it has been seven years ago. I still remember how it started and how it felt and… I’m sure of it.”
Nick can see Ayame reaching out. Placing her hand on Freya’s shoulder.
“Or you are being too pessimistic. Dare tell me you don’t have that tendency…”
Freya laughs sadly. And Nick knows it is true. She does sees things rather pessimistically sometimes.
“And coughing up blood? Is that being too pessimistic?”
Nick’s eyes widen together with Ayame’s.
“Nani…”
It’s whispered. Very softly. Nick nearly misses it. The disbelieve on her face matches his own. And the fear. The fear as well.
“Believe me Ayame. The cancer is back.”
Freya sighs before taking a sip of her tea.
“After seven years. I really thought I had beaten it. I really thought I was healed. I really thought…”
Her voice breaks and her hands start trembling. Quickly she places the cup on the table.
Without paying any attention to Japanese courtesy and etiquette, Ayame stands up and sets herself next to Freya. Wrapping her arms around the shivering girl. Holding her close. Just holding her close. She doesn’t need to speak. There is no need for words. What could she possibly say anyway? There is nothing that could ease this pain and sorrow and sadness.
Nick just stares at them. Not yet completely grasping what has just been said. Still putting the pieces together. But Freya and cancer just don’t fit into one sentence.
Silently he walks away. Not wanting to interrupt. Not wanting to… He wasn’t meant to hear this conversation.
He opens the shoji to his own room, not closing it. He needs the fresh spring breeze. Setting himself down on his futon. Cross legged. His head in his hands. Trying to imagine Freya weakened by the cancer. Trying to imagine his life without her…
Shuddering he takes a deep breath. He doesn't want to... It is a lonely place. A sad place. A dark place.
The sound of rain falling on the ground makes him look up. Surprised he walks to the entrance of his room. Part of the sky is still blue and cloudless and even the sun is still shining. But it rains. Hard.
He hears the shoji of Ayame’s room completely slide open. Sees how the two girls walk out. Of course Freya notices him and they both walk over to him.
"Look Nick."
There is an open, honest, happy smile on her face. As if nothing has happened. As if the conversation he heard didn't take place. He can see it takes Ayame some more willpower and trouble to hide the concern and the sadness.
"It's Kitsune’s Wedding!"
She points to the sky where a rainbow has arrived.
"Isn't it beautiful?"
He nods, but he can't bring himself to smile. Luckily she doesn't notice it. Or perhaps she does. But she doesn’t react to it. He’s grateful for that. He wouldn’t know what to say...

Your input is grately apreciated! :-) I learn new things every time. ^^
I know - or at least I thought, so thank you for confirming it ^^ - that they do not hide their emotions when being with family and close friends. But it's kind of Nick's POV and he does not really know it. ^^ Although how I wrote it might work confussing and I should just have added that detail... *sweatdrop* I'll see if I can change it when I'm back from work. ^^
