“My lady?”

Anna turned at the sound of the voice.

“Yes?”

“Your brothers are here to see you,” the young girl said.

Anna frowned slightly. The girl was staring intently at her.

“Send them in.”

“Yes, Your Majesty,” she said leaving the room.

Anna walked over to the mirror. She ran her finger over the lines on her face. She was only thirty for Bronde’s sake. Was she really aging that fast?

“Sweet sister, you always were in a mirror,” Jean Luc said coming up behind her.

Anna gripped the edges of the mirror.

“I’m getting old, brother.”

“Nonsense,” Pierre said coming over to the two of them. He placed a kiss on Anna’s dark hair and smiled at her in the mirror. “You look as beautiful as you did when came back from Iberte!”

Anna turned away from the mirror. She smiled gratefully at Pierre. He always did know the right thing to say to her.

“Where is Marie?” Anna asked walking into the connecting sitting room.

“Oh she’s out playing the country mistress,” Jean Luc said taking a seat on the couch.

Anna sat down next to him and waited for Pierre to sit as well.

Pierre sat down next to Anna and smiled at her.

“Are you alright?” Pierre asked quietly.

She grabbed his hand as well as Jean Luc’s which surprised her elder brother.

“What is this, Anna?”

“Have you heard anything?”

Jean Luc frowned. “It’s nothing but rumors, Anna; you needn’t get yourself in a tizzy.”

She turned to Pierre. “What have you heard?”

“Jean Luc is right, it’s nothing.”

“Then why won’t you tell me?”

“We didn’t want to upset you since…” Jean Luc trailed off.

“I’ve been pregnant before,” she snapped.

“Anna, the court is just rife with rumors. All you need to worry about is delivering safely of a second prince,” Pierre said.

She let go of their hands and clutched her belly.

“How can I not worry, when there are spies everywhere? Did you see that girl that let you in? I know her family is working against me.”

Pierre pulled her to him. “They are no match against us.”

Anna begrudgingly smiled at him. “I should hope so, brother.”

“Pierre is right. We Everarts protect our own,” Jean Luc said winking at her.

She sighed. “I wish Marie were here.”

“What?” Jean Luc asked. “You and Marie are always at each other’s throats, always have been. Why would you want her here now?”

“It would be nice to have her here is all. I don’t need to explain myself to you,” she said standing up.

Jean Luc laughed. “Of course not, sweet sister. You are the Queen.”

Anna grinned at him. “Be mindful of that, brother.”

She walked out of the sitting room leaving her brothers behind.

Pierre stood to leave, but Jean Luc reached out to him.

“Keep your guard up, brother.”

Pierre nodded. “You as well.”

They both nodded as they left the room together.

Anna seems paranoid here. Is she right to be? I think the fact that her brothers seem to be keeping things from her isn't a good sign.
