Sulphur 4, Harvest Gold 9, Russet 8: Not Working Out

Author: Kat
Title: Not Working Out
Story: In the Heart
Colors: Sulphur 4 (Summoning), harvest gold 9 (fall back), russet 8 (knotted).
Supplies and Materials: Tapestry, charcoal (Andrew), miniature, frame, brush (devoir), modeling clay (nothing), pastels (eccentric).
Word Count: 100
Rating: PG-13.
Summary: It isn't working out.
Warnings: none.
Notes: Surprisingly Summer's most serious ex is also named Andrew. No relation to Dalton.

Summer's a sweet kid, Andrew thinks, but that's all she really is, a kid, and he can't believe it took him this long to realize it. It must have been her school; he never expected to find someone so childlike working pathology. And there's nothing childlike about her body.

But she's so naïve, so strange. She's pleased to be with him but just as pleased to be reading a book. She sleeps peacefully, doesn't kick, but she's so distant when she's awake.

He takes a deep breath, dials her number, inhales again at her voice. "Summer, we need to talk."

ALL OF MY 90'S BREAKUP SONGS.

ALL OF THEM.

(Although, I wouldn't trade her with her boys for anything.)

STILL OWS.

Guh. Poor Andrew. Condescending, but not overtly so, and with some compassion, at least.

I still agree with SWL, though, that she's better off with her boys.

This - She's pleased to be with him but just as pleased to be reading a book. - hit home. I often read as very unreactive unless I'm consciously projecting a given emotion, and I know it can bother friends and loved ones. There's a difference between feeling an emotion and expressing it in a way that registers with neurotypical people. I can hardly blame Aaron for not recognizing as much, but if he doesn't, breaking up is probably kinder for both him and Summer.
