“I can’t wait for winter to come,” Alexandra said taking a sip of her cherry cola.
Mari shook her head at her friend, but didn’t say anything.
“You’re so weird, Alexa. Why would anyone be excited about cold weather?”
Alexandra glanced at Jennika, but didn’t say anything.
“I’m not excited for winter per se, but for the holidays.”
Jennika smiled. “Oh yeah you mean Christmas? I want my grandparents to get me a new vanity table.”
“Jen, Alexa doesn’t really celebrate Christmas,” Mari said tapping her fingers in the table.
Jennika stopped and looked at Alexandra. “Oh yeah that’s right, you’re Muslim.”
Alexandra smiled. “Yup. My family is celebrating Eid al-Adha. We might celebrate Christmas because of Mom, but it’s more traditional for all three of us to celebrate the feast.”
Mari sighed. “I wish I could get excited about Christmas again.”
“Why aren’t you excited?” Jennika asked.
“I don’t know the holiday just doesn’t feel the same to me anymore. Maybe it’s because I’m not a kid anymore. Plus I’m really not for going to Mass anymore. Mom and Abuela keep trying to get me to come though.”
Mari took a sip of her cola and put it back down.
“We should do something special,” Alexandra said.
“Like what?” Jennika asked.
“We should do something special for each of us. I don’t know we could go see a movie or go to a fancy restaurant or something.”
Mari looked up. “That does sound like fun.”
“Yeah we should gather all our girl friends and just do something.”
“You’re on to something El-Amin! I’ll talk to Lana and some of the others,” Jennika said.
Mari smiled at Alexandra, who winked back at her.
It looked like winter just got a lot more appealing to one Mari Rodriguez.
