Maxine was sitting in the back of the Moore Library studying for her upcoming exam. She sighed as she closed the book.
Her mind went back to yesterday night. When she had left the house this morning, she had taken a knife with her in case whatever had attacked her came back. But she walked the two blocks to Grimke College and no one bothered her. She didn’t even hear the noisy dogs like she usually did.
“Max?”
She turned around and saw Veronica coming to the table. She moved her heavy textbooks aside and patted the seat next to her.
Veronica sat down and cleared her throat.
“So did everything go well last night?”
Maxine looked at Veronica out of the corner of her eye. She looked a bit nervous and she wouldn’t look her in the eye.
“Everything went fine,” Maxine lied.
Veronica turned and looked at her. Her cinnamon brown eyes looked worried.
“Are you sure?”
Maxine laid her hand on Veronica’s shoulder.
“Are you hiding something from me, Roni?”
Veronica sighed. “Everything didn’t go well last night, did it?”
Maxine nodded.
“I know what attacked you, Max.”
“What you do mean what? Don’t you mean who?”
Veronica laced her fingers together. “If I tell you, you promise not to get upset?”
Maxine rolled her eyes. “I promise, Roni.”
“I believe it was a vampire that attacked you,” Veronica said slowly.
Maxine didn’t say anything. She just stared at Veronica.
“Are you fucking kidding me?”
Veronica looked up surprised. “I know it sounds ludicrous, but I’m telling the truth.”
Maxine snorted, which turned into full blown laughter. The library’s other occupants looked at their table.
“Max! Remember where we are!” Veronica said.
Maxine gradually stopped laughing.
“Roni, I think you’ve been watching too many horror movies.”
Veronica shot her a pointed glance which made Maxine grin.
“I know it sounds stupid, but it’s the truth.”
Maxine sat up in the wooden chair. “Let me ask you a hypothetical question, Roni. Say vampires do exist? How do you even know about them?”
Veronica stopped. She looked at Maxine for a long moment.
“I’m a witch,” Veronica said.
“Like a witch as in a Wiccan or a witch as in…?”
“The latter,” Veronica said nervously.
Maxine put her hands over her face and shook her head. This was all just too much. She knew Veronica just wouldn’t tell her lies. They had been friends for almost three years now and Veronica was one of the most trustworthy people she knew. But she couldn’t be telling the truth about this? It was just too fucking much.
“Max, are you alright?” Veronica asked uncertainly.
Suddenly Maxine stood up. She grabbed her messenger bag and stuffed her laptop and books into it.
“Where are you going?” Veronica asked standing up as well.
“I have a class to get to, Roni. I’ll talk to you later,” Maxine said walking past her.
Veronica checked her phone. “But it’s only 2:30! Your class doesn’t start until 3!”
Maxine waved over her shoulder as she walked out the double doors.
Veronica sighed and sat back down. She supposed that it was good that Maxine didn’t call her bananas for what she said. Still though, she didn’t take it very well. Only time would tell though. She just hoped that Maxine wouldn’t tell anyone. She would be receiving a call from the IWC if Maxine told. But she knew her friend. She just needed time to think.
