Detective Deshell Miller had always wanted to be in homicide, from the moment he'd entered the Academy. He’d even taken a Hunting class, to improve his chances--homicide liked detectives who could handle the supernatural.
Now here he was, with his dream job, and his first case as a bona-fide homicide detective was an eleven-year-old killing her uncle, supposedly to stop him murdering her seven-year-old brother.
Kids. Why did it have to be kids?
His partner smiled at him as they reached the hospital to interview the girl and her mother--the boy was still in surgery. "Welcome to homicide."

Most of his cases aren't this bad. I think he was a robbery detective for a year or so before he transferred to homicide. Those cases didn't typically involve messes like this.
(Nolani isn't prosecuted for this, don't worry. :D But violent deaths must be investigated, so here he is.)
