Cora awoke to her mother’s singing.
“What time is it?” Cora said to herself. Today was a Saturday, so she had half a day to work at the textile factory.
“Ugh why won’t she shut up?” Her younger sister, Evelyn, said from the bed across from hers.
Cora threw back the covers of her bed. She picked up the pillow and threw it at Evelyn.
“Hey what was that for!” Evelyn said sitting up. Her dark brown hair was all over her head and her eyes looked red.
“Don’t talk about Mama like that. You know Maude’s been feeling down,” Cora said starting to make up her bed.
“So, Maude is a big baby. She’s always sick or something,” Evelyn said throwing down the pillow on the floor. She got out of her bed and went to the closet they shared.
“Evelyn, aren’t you going to make up your bed?”
Evelyn pulled down a white blouse from the closet.
“I will Cora, good god, calm down!”
Cora sighed. She pushed Evelyn out of the way and pulled down a white blouse of her own along with a stiff black skirt.
“Why do we have to dress so boring?” Evelyn said elbowing Cora out of the way.
“Because we have to look proper,” Cora said pulling on her skirt.
Evelyn didn’t say anything as she pulled on her blouse and reached for a somber dark green skirt.
“I see some women were gaudy garments. Just once I’d like to wear something fabulous,” Evelyn said wistfully.
“And where would you wear such things?” Cora asked.
“I don’t know, but it’d be nice to have the choice,” Evelyn said.
Cora nodded. “Personally I don’t want to wear the garments. I want to make them.”
Evelyn stopped. “What?”
“I want to be a modiste,” Cora whispered.
Evelyn laughed. “Why Cora?”
Cora shrugged. “Why not? I’m a good seamstresses and I make all our clothes. I want to be big like Charles Frederick Worth.”
Evelyn shook her head. “Well good luck with trying to do that here in Alabama.”
Cora pinched Evelyn’s arm. “You’re a spoilsport.”
Evelyn pinched her back as they walked out of the room and into the kitchen.
Their mother, Maria, was holding their youngest sister Maude in her arms and was singing the ‘Nana’ lullaby to her.
“Go to sleep, little star of the morning,” Maria sang in a pleasant voice.
Maude cuddled up to Maria.
“You’re spoiling her, Mama,” Evelyn said sitting down at the table.
“She’s mine to spoil,” Maria said not looking up.
Evelyn sighed and reached for the milk.
“I don’t have time to eat a full breakfast, but I’ll eat a hotcake,” Cora said reaching for one.
Maria grabbed her hand before she could pick up one.
“You sit down and eat, Cora. Its 7:30 and you don’t start work until 9:15.”
Cora sighed and pulled out a chair.
“Where’s Dad?” Evelyn asked.
“He had to work a late shift last night, so he’s still asleep,” Maria said pushing strands of dark hair out of her face.
“I see Harriet is still asleep as well,” Evelyn said.
Maria stopped and gave Evelyn a look. Evelyn looked down and stuffed eggs into her mouth.
There was a knock on the door. Cora shot up and ran to get it.
“Who is it?” Maria called.
“It’s Clara,” Cora said leading Clara to the kitchen.
“Hello Mrs. Orozco,” Clara said smiling at Maria.
“Hello sweet Clara. Is everything alright at home?”
“Same as always, though there was a bit of ruckus last night,” Clara said.
Cora wiped her mouth with her handkerchief. “What do you mean?”
“Some white kids from the east side of town came into our neighborhood,” Clara said stiffly.
“Really?” Evelyn said tugging at Clara’s skirt.
“Don’t touch people without asking, Evelyn,” Maria snapped.
Evelyn let go of Clara’s skirt, but stared intently at her.
“I couldn’t believe it either,” Clara said.
“Sweet Jesus,” Cora said. “I’m ready to go, Clara.”
Clara smiled at Maria and waved to Evelyn.
“I’ll be back at 2, Mama,” Cora said as she followed Clara through the kitchen.
“Have a good day at work,” Maria called.
Evelyn burped.
“Evelyn, really?”
Evelyn shrugged as she stood up from the table. “I’m going to finish my homework.”
Maria nodded. Maude had fallen asleep in her mother’s arms. Maria sighed and reached for her cold breakfast.
