“What do you think, Mama?” Clara asked.
Ellen wiped her hands on her apron and came into her daughter’s room.
“What am I supposed to be looking at, Clara?”
Clara rolled her eyes and pointed to the typewriter on her desk.
“Oh that is a fine piece you got there. How much was it?”
Clara hesitated in telling her mother how much the Portex had cost. She had spent almost all of her weekly paycheck on it.
“It was on sale,” Clara started.
Ellen pursed her lips at her daughter. “I know you’re hiding something from me, Clara May. How much did you pay for it?”
“Almost nineteen dollars Mama, but it was in good shape and it was on sale and I’ve been wanting one and-“
Ellen held up her hand.
“You don’t have to make excuses to me, Clara May. You worked for the money and if you want to blow your whole paycheck on it, then that’s fine by me. Your father on the other hand though…”
“You don’t think he’ll be terribly angry, do you?” Clara asked running her finger across the keys on the typewriter.
“Ah you know your father. But I’ll talk to him,” Ellen said smiling at Clara.
Clara ran forward and hugged her mother.
“Thank you, Mama. I promise I won’t let y’all down.”
Ellen patted her daughter’s back. “I know, sweetie. What you planning to write?”
Clara stepped back.
“I’ve been thinking about writing a novel about a shepherdess. I’m thinking about calling it the Idylls, but I don’t have a name for the character yet. It’s in its early stages,” Clara babbled out quickly.
Ellen smiled. “That sounds interesting baby. I’ll want to hear more about it as you write okay?”
“Yes ma’am!”
Ellen smiled and pinched her daughter’s cheek before leaving the room. Clara turned back to her desk.
“I’m gone make Mama and Daddy proud,” Clara mused. “I’ll write the best damn book Alabama has ever seen.”
