Aldric rolled the finger bones in his cupped palm, gaze unfocused. These pieces were new, both in life and death; a wizarding child, a mundane teenager, an alfar abortion, a kernan stillbirth. All unfortunate accidents -- of course -- all within the previous fortnight.

Kaija sat across from him, elbows on the round table between them, nearly invisible in the dark. Her eyes gleamed in the candlelight as she leaned forward, eager for his vision. She had procured the necessary elements. Lovely woman. Devout. Efficient. Impulsive, at times, but that would ease with age.

He tilted his hand and the bones tumbled like dice; they clattered against the table, knocking into each other. A few spilled to the floor.

Shore. Pond ripples lapping at damp earth. Deep grass green with life. A boy hugging his mother.

A path through the woods. An alleyway between skyscrapers. A tunnel in the rocks, barely the width of a man. A current in the ocean.

Aldric sighed, heavy and deep, more air leaving him than his lungs could possibly hold. Black smoke curled at the edges of his vision -- his physical vision, in the here and now. He was tempted to turn his head, but he was patient.

The smoke receded.

"Master Dweven?" Kaija pulsed with energy and life. Her tiny halted movements shone in the dark. An outline of her standing, coming to his side, while her actual self still sat, body humming.

"I am no one's Master," he said at last. His voice rasped. "If you would."

She muttered under her breath, a habit the Assembly had instilled in so many of this generation. It kept the mundanes happy, they said, knowing when a wizard did his work.

Madness.

A glass of water appeared on the table. She hummed in satisfaction and offered it to him.

He took a sip. "Well done."

"It was only in the next room," she said, but she sounded pleased.

He finished the glace and set it down, watching a droplet slip down the side. "Something is changing."

"Something is always changing," Kaija said, then slapped a hand over her mouth.

Aldric chuckled. "True." He pat her arm. Impulsive. "Something vast. Larger than ourselves." He sighed. "Something I cannot see."

"May I?" she asked after a moment. He nodded and she knelt to collect the fallen bones. Useless, now. A shame.

"Pathing," he murmured, wondering at it.

Kaija twisted her mouth as she stood, gathering the bones into a pile. "The Court took care of that particular problem."

"Yes." He steepled his hands. "Yes."

She bagged the bones and shook it. "Burn them," they said in unison. Aldric smiled.

"One of the children?" she asked, turning to go.

He hummed. "Perhaps. We will keep an eye on them."

Kaija nodded as she left.

The smoke returned, tendrils reaching across his gaze. Would it, if he closed his eyes, fill the room?

He waved his fingers, and the candles snuffed themselves out.

Oooh, this is an interesting piece. I like how present everything is here--your imagery really makes it feel like we're in the room, but with still a little mystery to wonder what's happening.

Ooh, kind of creepy. I'm curious who they were talking about.

The sensory details are fantastic. It's enjoyable to try and work out what (and how) their magic is doing. Your visions are nicely cryptic, rather than too straightforward... though Dweven seems to have recognized more than I did.
