Mari leaned against Daniel’s back. They were sitting in his backyard. Though it had to be 100 degrees out, they hadn’t gotten into the pool yet.
“You know what they have a lot of in California?”
“What?”
Daniel turned around and put his arms around her. She stiffened up, but gradually relaxed.
“They have an assload of vineyards out there. Did you know that winemaking has its own branch of horticulture?”
Mari shook her head against his chest. “No, I didn’t know that.”
“Yeah it’s called viticulture,” Daniel said rubbing her arms.
“Since when are you so interested in wine? I thought you were more of a beer person.”
Daniel laughed. “I am, but I drink other stuff too, senorita.”
“Daniel,” a small voice called.
Daniel looked up to see his little sister, Candice, standing at the backdoor. He let go of Mari and stood up.
“What is it, Candy?”
“Mom was calling for you,” Candice said.
Daniel sighed. “Is she in one of her moods?”
Candice nodded.
Daniel turned to Mari. She was wearing a concerned look on her face.
“I’ll be back, Mari. I need to go deal with my mom.”
Mari stood up and reached for her tote.
“I think I’m going to go,” she said turning her back to him and bending over her bag.
She felt him touch her shoulder.
“You don’t have to leave, Mari. I just need to calm her down.”
Mari turned around and hoisted her bag on her shoulder. She smiled at him then.
“Call me okay?”
Daniel sighed as she went through the gate connecting the back of the yard to the front.
He felt a tug on his shorts. He looked down.
“Do you like her?” Candice asked.
“I do,” Daniel said leading Candice back inside.
“You know Mom doesn’t like her,” Candice said.
Daniel opened the fridge and took out two apple juices for Candice and Dennis.
“I know that, Candy.”
He handed it to her. She punched the straw through the package and began to drink.
“What you don’t understand is that I don’t care what Mom thinks,” Daniel said heading towards his mother’s room.
Candice watched him go. She sighed and went to sit down on the couch. She could hear yelling from the back room. But for her that was completely normal.
