Summary: The Black Beasts attack them when they are walking through the forest.
Notes: Constructive criticism is, as always, welcome
Frey’s cheerful laugh echoes through the forest and it makes Caithlynn smile.
“It was a good idea. You all needed this. The peace and tranquillity. Even if only for a couple of days. Even if you know you’re going to leave again soon. But you needed this Alan. Don’t try to deny it.”
He shakes his head when he hears Naigendra’s voice.
“I’m not denying it. I know we needed this more than another battle. But the facts remain the same. We are bringing danger to this village and the war is still raging on out there.”
But even despite his sad and sorrow-filled words, he can’t stop the smile that graces his lips when he sees how Caithlynn runs after Frey, trying to catch him. There is nothing about her now that shows she is one of the Element Wielders. She’s just a girl, playing catch with an eight year old kid, in the forest.
“Jealous?”
His Dragon’s teasing him. Though it is not all mirth in her voice. There is concern as well. After all, she knows.
“Yes.”
It is the first time he’d ever admit that. It even surprises himself.
“The night will soon be here little one.”
He relishes in the comfort Naigendra offers him. Smiles when she still calls him ‘little one’. They both know he will spend the night outside, curled up by her side, hidden under her winds.
Alan walks further into the forest. Following the other two Wielders. He is the first one to notice something is not right. He can suddenly feel it. In the air. It is everywhere around them.
“Caithlynn.”
His voice is soft but persisted none the less. It makes her react immediately. She turns around. Completely alert. The play completely forgotten.
Frey stops running when he notices she stands still. “Caithlynn, what…”
He stops when he sees the look on her face. Concentrated. Worried. Even… Afraid.
Looking beyond her, he sees the same look on Alan’s face. And it is only then that he feels the unrest himself. It comes from his Dragon. Kayerith is just as nervous as Caithlynn and Alan. He presumes Naigendra and Taigiri are as well.
“Frey. Get over here.”
She is just whispering, but he doesn’t dare not to obey. He’s nearly running when he moves over to where Caithlynn is standing. Alan right next to her.
Big, afraid, eyes are looking up to them. And despite what she must be feeling, Caithlynn looks down and smile reassuringly at him. Her hand on his shoulder. He can feel how tense she is. She’s even shivering.
And that is when he feels it as well. Something. All around them. His eyes shoot from left to right and back left again. His hands balled to fists.
“What are they?”
A flash of surprise on Alan’s face when hearing Frey’s question. The kid is more mature than he gave him credit for.
“They are Lost Souls.”
Frey looks up at Alan. Not afraid anymore. Lost Souls are not dangerous. Still Caithlynn and Alan stay tensed, the looks on their faces not changing.
“There is something else?”
Caithlynn nods, pulls him closer to her body, as if to hide him behind her. A soft growling before them makes her call the Wind to her hand.
“Stay alert.”
It is all she can whisper before the huge… thing… attacks. Black fur and glittering white teeth. Sharp and pointy and long. Red eyes, as if the fire of hell itself was burning in them. Frey can’t help it. He screams. Even though he knows the Wind and the Fire will block the animal before it can reach them. And despite standing safely behind caithlynn, he falls.
“Don’t be afraid. Their powers are strong enough. Certainly combined. Don’t be afraid.”
Kayerith’s gentle voice. It helps him stand up again. There is a new-born fire in his eyes. A courage he never thought he possessed. Silently he calls for the Water. Feeling it answer his call. Letting it run to his hands. Making it obey with only his thoughts.
His Dragon was right. The animal was no match for their combined power. Certainly not for the three of them.
Smiling Caithlynn turns around. “Brave boy.”
Frey smiles. Notices how Alan nods his head in agreement.
“Are there more?”
His voice is still trembling though and his eyes widen when he sees them nod.
“Yes, there are. So let’s get going.”
Frey takes a firm hold of Caithlynn’s hand when they start walking back to the village.
“I thought they only hunted at night. I though they didn’t attack people.”
The kid misses the look of understanding that passes between Alan and Caithlynn.
“It was not itself. They…”
Alan looks around, knowing there are more. Knowing they fear the Elements. Knowing they will not attack.
“… are not themselves.”
He can see the puzzlement on Frey’s face. Can see the understanding lighting up his face when he understand the meaning of Alan’s words.
“Like…being bewitched?”
Caithlynn smiles. She grew fond of this kid.
“Yeah, something like that.”
Frey nods. Thoughtful.“Is it because of us? Is it because we are here?”
He doesn’t need an answer. They all know what the truth is.
-
“He’s asleep.”
Alan’s voice, right next to her. She heard him coming, so he didn’t startle her. She doesn’t look at him though. Her gaze fixed on the sky. The darkness of the night is comforting. She knows the Dragons are near. And she is tempted, very tempted to just run and hide in the safety of Taigiri’s wings.
Without another word the Wielder of Fire sets himself down right next to her. His gaze traveling up as well. “Wow.”
Caithlynn smiles. Sadly.
“Yeah, for reasons unknown, when there are no clouds, the stars are very bright over here. Except for the North, I’ve known no other place that has such a sparkling sky.”
Alan hums in agreement. The silence that falls is – for a change – not an uncomfortable one. Even though Caithlynn knows, feels…
“You were right.”
She feels Alan’s surprised gaze on her.
“We do bring danger to them.”
He shakes his head. Only for a second wondering how she could have heard. Until she offers him the answer by letting the wind rise in force.
“This is just the beginning Alan. The animals turning against us and their own nature. It’s only the beginning. If we stay, I fear for what will happen here.”
Gently he puts his hand on her shoulder. “Don’t worry.”
“But I am worried. This is my village. My mother.”
She sighs.
“You were right all along. We shouldn’t have come here. Shouldn’t have taken the risk. We should leave.”
Alan holds her back when she stands up. His hand but a light grip on her wrist. If she wants to, she can easily break free from it.
“Yes, we should leave. But there is time. If we leave in the morning, it will be alright. The danger for the night has passed. The animals will not attack. The Dark Wielders will not dare to try and influence their minds again. And they cannot act before tomorrow. When they see us leave, they’ll leave this town alone.”
Caithlynn sets herself back down. For once not minding at all that Alan spoke up. Not minding that he held her back. Though she doesn’t say what is on her minds. She knows he thinks the same. The Dark Wielders could easily attack this village when they are gone. If only to get to Caithlynn. If only to set an example. If only to…
“They will not. The animals will protect the village and its inhabitants. You know they will.”
She nods. Still not completely convinced.
“We did not kill it. We did not hunt them down. We left their territory. They appreciate that. They know they’ve been brainwashed. They know they acted under Dark influence.”
Neither of them had known the Dark Wielders to be so powerful. It wasn’t only the elements they could control. There was lots more they were capable of…
“They will not allow that to happen again.”
Caithlynn knows the influence was broken because of the use of their Elements. She knows the animals are grateful. Not only for this time.
“Thanks Alan.”
She smiles at him when she stands up again. Noticing the shy look on his face. Perhaps they really got off on the wrong foot. Perhaps the other one wasn’t so bad as they thought.
“Good night.”
He grunts a response while she walks back inside. Her mother waiting for her. Having heard every word. And even though Sarah is afraid, she doesn’t show it. Her arms are still a safe place to hide…

“Yes.”-
I love Alan! He's wonderful in this part, he is throughout this entire fic. I hope the wolves will try to protect th village and that the villagers will not fear them.

As for the 'beasts'.. I'm not sure if they are wolf. I had something more frightning in mind, I just don't know what they are called. XD But I can make it wolfs. Makes it a little easier on me... XD

At a certain moment I thought a pack of white wolves would come to the rescue. I had the offspring of the white wolf in mind that Sarah saved such long time ago. I guess that's why I linked them with wolves.
White wolves turned malicious => black?

*nods* I understand the link. And you might be right about it.
the pack of wolves is for another time though. :p But, shhh, don't tell anyone this little spoiler. :pUhm, good idea. But, no... I had something else in mind. I just need to find the name... *sweatdrop*
