Dogwood Rose #3
Title: A Single White Rose
Author: Sashataakheru
Story: Rosewood Dog
Color: Dogwood Rose #3 (White: Silence and Secrecy)
Word Count: 438
Rating: FRT
Warnings: None/No applicable warnings
Author's Notes: New 'verse. Kinda sketchy. Might be something in it. Was looking at my colour lists, hoping to write something and the Muses delivered, well, whatever this is. I think they took things literally, and so now, this. A queer pair of Welshpeople, roses as messages, and a weird little rosewood dog, which may or may not turn out to be a maguffin. Can I get a story tag, please, mods? <3
A Single White Rose
A white rose sat delicately on the low stone wall. The wind half-heartedly threatened to blow it away, but the stem caught on a small jutting piece of rock, and it remained steadfast. It had been left there at dawn, a message for someone who wouldn't find it until the next day.
It was an isolated wall, marking the boundary between two counties that stretched across vast swathes of rich farming country. The roses were perhaps a more abstract form of messages than Aled would've chosen, but xei understood why it was necessary, even out in an isolated place like this, where there was no civilisation around for miles, apart from a small flock of wild sheep, and some stray mountain goats.
A finger paused, caressing the petals. Its message had been understood, even if it wasn't what xei had hoped for. Gwynedd had always been somewhat hesitant to let Aled into their life, but the rosewood dog had haunted their dreams until they'd given in. A small, silly little trinket, once picked up in a charity shop for 50 pence, it had defined their relationship in every way.
Aled hadn't seen the rosewood dog for weeks. Gwynedd had taken it last time they'd met, promised to keep it safe. Aled wasn't sure xei'd ever see them again. The white rose had been seen once before, and it had thrown their relationship into a miserable hiatus. Gwynedd had vanished across the seas, returning months later with no desire to speak of what they had been doing. Aled had remained faithful, as xei must, because the rosewood dog had asked it of xem.
Seeing the white rose again, Aled pushed xer feeling aside. There was no point in mourning. Gwynedd may return in their own time, and there was nothing xei could do about it. Fingers pinched together, picking a single petal from the flower. A hand closed around it. Night was falling now, and the moon sat low and swollen just above the horizon.
"Well, at least it was good while it lasted," xei murmured. "Maybe one day you'll come back to me."
Aled left the rose where it lay. The petal xei'd taken was slipped into a small pouch with all the others. Each had their own scent and magic, telling their story through the petals alone. A thirteen-sided die rolled about with them.
With nothing left to do, Aled whistled for xer dog as xei mounted xer pony. There was a way to go before xei could rest. The small grey dog trotted happily along side them as they hit the road, leaving the rose behind.
