Notes: Constructive criticism is, as always, welcome
"See you soon."
Surprised Rafael looks at her. Non-understanding.
"That's what you said. Right before you disappeared. Before they..."
She can hardly say the word.
"Before they erased you."
It's a soft whisper. So soft.
"I'll see you soon Nelly. That is what you said..."
There are tears running down her cheeks. She doesn't even bother to hide them or wipe them away.
"It's been a year. A year... And only now I remember you for the first time. A year Rafael. That's not 'see you soon' anymore."
She backs away when he approaches. Sees the hurt of rejection in his eyes. But she's just hurt and angry and scared herself.
"I know."
A whisper. A little bit defeated.
"I'm sorry Nelly.'
He turns around and Nelly's eyes open wide when she sees him walking away.
"You're better off without me. I bring you nothing but pain and sorrow."
Yelling, she runs after him. Feeling wild panic spread through her like an ice cold fire.
"No! You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. Don't push me away now I finally found you again!"
Her arms wrapped around his waist. Her head resting against his back, between his shoulder blades.
"Nelly."
She shakes her head. "Don't. Please. Don't say it."
He turns around in her embrace. Gently placing his hands on her shoulders, pushing her away – just a little – so he can look in her eyes.
"Nelly. This is a dream. You'll have forgotten all about it when morning comes."
She shakes her head, tries to get closer again – needs to feel his body against her. Even if only for a little while…
She knows. Knows he is right. She can feel it. In everything. She will forget him again… The joy she felt at seeing him again – though deep down she knew it could never have been real – crushed by his words. For a second she was hopeful. And optimistic. And… She really thought he’d be back….
“I know this can’t be real. I know you’ll be gone again when I wake. So don’t you dare leaving me now. Don’t you dare leaving when I can still remember you…”
At last she feels him wrap his arms around her again. Can feel his breath against her ear.
“I’d never leave you.”
