Marie walked to that woman’s quarters. She had sent a footman to retrieve her from her lessons. Marie had taken her sweet time to come which made her tutor tremble. She did feel sorry for him as she knew he was probably going to get into trouble, but she wanted to make that woman wait, after all she was used to waiting.
She arrived and the guards let her inside.
“Maman!” A little voice laughed.
Marie peeked into the room and saw her little sisters with their mother.
Elisabeth was sitting in her lap and Marguerite was clinging to her left arm.
Suddenly Elisabeth bopped Anna on the head.
Marie was surprised when that woman began to laugh.
“Why did you hit me, Betha?” Anna asked with laughter in her voice.
“Because it looks like it needs hitting,” Betha said reaching up to play with her mother’s A pendent.
“I wouldn’t hit you on the head Maman,” Marguerite said.
Anna turned to her younger daughter and smiled.
“Of course not, you’re my good girl, Margot,” that woman said plucking Marguerite’s nose. The little girl giggled and fell back on the bed.
Marie stepped forward and coughed.
Anna looked up and saw her. There was still mirth in her eyes, but when she saw Marie, her eyes immediately went cold.
“Princess Marie. It took you such a very long time to come and see me. I was wondering if you’d forgotten me.”
“I was learning my Kontian adjectives, my lady.”
Anna clicked her tongue.
“Marie!” Elisabeth called out to her.
Marie came into the room. She bent down next to the bed.
“Hello Betha,” Marie said gently.
“Where have you been Marie? You didn’t visit me,” Elisabeth said.
Marie smiled. “I went to see my mother.”
As she said this she could feel that woman’s eyes on the top of her head. She kept her head down.
“Speaking of that Princess Marie,” she started.
Marie sighed and looked up.
“Your father tells me that your mother wrote to him.”
Marie’s eyes widened. She didn’t know her parents were still in contact.
“Oh?”
Anna smiled. Marie felt a shiver go through her. How could this woman’s smile look so positively scary? Weren’t smiles supposed to be relaxing and comforting?
“Yes she did. It was about you. She implored your father to speak to me. He told me to be nicer to you, Madame Princess.”
Marie scrunched up her toes. She had mentioned something along those lines to her mother. But she didn’t think she’d write to her father. But she also knew that her mother was fiercely protective of her.
“Why would she say something like that, Marie?”
Marie looked up. Anna’s gaze was narrowed on her. She was clutching Elisabeth and Marguerite to her.
“I suppose she thinks I’m being mistreated, my lady.”
“Ah but why would she think that?” Anna prodded.
Marie swallowed but stared right back at Anna.
“I suppose someone told her.”
“Exactly Madame Princess,” Anna said. “I suppose this means that your mother has spies somewhere in the palace.”
Marie opened her mouth to say something, but she shut it.
“These people will be found out, Marie. The entire staff of the palace and my ladies, your ladies, the Queen Dowager’s ladies, His Majesty’s retinue is being investigated. I will find them, Marie, and when I do they will be punished for their insolence. You may leave,” she said dismissing her.
Marie started to leave but she stopped.
“You know my mother has powerful connections, my lady. Do you know she can have my uncle declare war on her behalf?”
Anna gave a deadly smile.
“I suppose she can. But if she were going to do that she would have done it some six years ago, wouldn’t she?”
Marie paled. She hadn’t thought of that. Maybe her uncle didn’t care about them? Why hadn’t he declared war on Monde in his sister’s honor?
“Do not try to threaten me, Madame Princess. I have thought of everything.”
Marie turned away. She didn’t want that woman to see her cry. She ran pass the Duchess of Friene and out of the room. She ran blindly. She didn’t know where she was going.
“Marie?”
Marie looked up and saw Jehann. He was looking down at her.
She smiled through her tears. She had found her way to him.
He stepped forward uncertainly.
She threw herself in his arms and the tears started to flow in earnest.
He squeezed her to him. “Everything will be alright. I will protect you.”
She nodded into his jerkin. She wanted him to protect her. She needed him to protect her. She knew that besides her mother and her ladies, there was no one else. This thought made her cry harder. Where had everything went wrong?
