P.S.- Mods can I pretty please get a tag for the story? I don't think anyone has seen the post from yesterday. So if you're just now seeing this I thought I'd ask again.
“Chloe!”
She ignored answering. She was lying down on the bed watching the Jim channel. She loved watching Star Walks; it was her favorite television show.
“Chloe Angeline Parker, I know you heard me calling you,” Her father said opening her bedroom door.
“I swear I didn’t Dad. I have the TV up,” she said with a straight face.
Matthew sighed and shook his head. He handed her the cordless phone.
She took it curiously. Who was calling her on the house phone? Everyone either called her on her cell or texted her if they wanted anything.
“Hello?”
“Chloe?” A soft voice came from the phone.
Chloe sat up. It was Jennifer. It was then that she remembered she hadn’t given her the cell number. She made a note to remember to give it to her.
“Yeah, what’s up?”
“I’m sorry for calling you at home, but I didn’t have any other way to contact you,” Jennifer’s voice quivered.
“Is everything alright?” Chloe asked.
“Yeah, it’s just that I qualified for the New England Blue Bowl!”
Chloe had to think about what that was. She recalled her elder sister, Samantha, saying something about that when she was in high school. It was the most prestigious tennis tournament in New England.
“Ah that’s great! I’m so happy for you,” Chloe said reaching across the bed and picking up the paperback book her mother had set aside for her. She looked at the cover; it said L as in Lover by Linda Y. Carleton. It was a legal thriller. Her mother ate this kind of shit up.
“So what are you doing?” Jennifer asked.
Chloe lay back on her queen sized bed. “Nothing really, I was just watching Star Walks and thinking about going out or something.”
“You watch Star Walks?”
“Yup.”
“But didn’t that show come out in the 1970s?”
Chloe laughed. “It did, but they’ve made various shows after the official end to the first series. My favorite is the Corporation series.”
“Huh. I didn’t know there were anymore shows. My grandfather likes to watch it when he comes over to visit.”
Chloe grinned. “Are you calling me old? I must say Jen, I’m offended.”
“Oh no, of course not, if I insinuated that, I swear I didn’t mean it. I-“
“I’m just messing with you!” Chloe teased. “I originally picked up the show from my dad. It’s kind of a family tradition, though my sister hates the show, but my little brother Timmy loves it.”
Jennifer laughed on the other end. Someone spoke in the background.
“Oh that’s my mother. She wants me to help make dinner. I’ll see you at school tomorrow okay?”
“Okay, I’ll talk to you later,” Chloe said somewhat disappointed.
She started to hang the phone up, but she heard Jennifer saying something.
“What was that?”
“I was just saying that I like it when you call me Jen,” she said.
Chloe smiled. “I like calling you Jen. It’s much more personal than Jennifer.”
“Indeed,” she said. “Okay, I really have to go now.”
Chloe laughed and hung up the phone. She sighed and stretched her arms. They felt weak. When had she last done her pushups? She got up and walked down to her father’s study to return the phone. She reminded herself to do 100 pushups. She was inordinately vain about her arms.
