Beat Control - Tilly and the Wall
So let the beat control you now,
there’s nothing here to care about.
Just you and me let’s break it down,
so follow me I’ll show you how.
It's all about the rhythm, the music and the beat. It starts up and she can't help but follow it. She starts slow-- Beat Control isn't particularly challenging, in and of itself, a good warmup song-- but dedicated. She's always dedicated to music.
As much as she loves her spouses, as much as she loves her children, this is her favorite time of day. They're all elsewhere, school or work or just somewhere else, and it's just her in this big sunny room, her and the beat and the music.
She closes her eyes.
Born This Way - Glee Cast (Gaga Cover)
There's nothin' wrong with lovin' who you are
She said, 'cause He made you perfect, babe
So hold your head up, girl and you you'll go far
Listen to me when I say
I'm beautiful in my way 'cause God makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track, baby, I was born this way
When Joy was a girl, her mother told her she was perfect.
It's partly because Joy is her only surviving child; she knows that breaks her mother's heart. But it's not the only reason. There's people out there who dislike Joy on sight-- the Christians, for one, and people who think she's being greedy, or think she should have more kids. Her mother never wanted Joy to look at herself in the mirror and hate what she saw.
She lets Born This Way swing her hips. She's never hated herself. And neither will her children.
Shake Them Haters Off - Kelly Rowland
Shine so bright it's hard to miss me
I love to keep haters busy
Mad 'cause I do what I want
And they only do what they can
Joy's developed her own means of dealing with the people who hate her.
Her dad told her to pretend they weren't there. Her mom suggested in an undertone that she give as good as she got. But the first is hard and the second exhausting, so Joy found a second option: she uses it.
Well, first she laughs at them, because really, who does that? Then, because spite is excellent motivation, she goes right on doing what she wants. Not her problem if they want to go on hating her.
She'll just go on being awesome.
Just Dance - Lady Gaga
Just dance. Gonna be okay.
Just dance. Spin that record babe.
Just dance. Gonna be okay.
Dance. Dance. Dance. Just dance.
Which isn't to say that she doesn't hate some people.
Just Dance always makes her think of Maya, so little and so terrified, trying so valiantly to survive when the people who should have taken care of her threw her out. Joy doesn't think she's ever hated anyone so much as Maya's biological parents.
But Just Dance also makes her think of Maya now, safe and happy, running around with the kids and shrieking with laughter, her own little boy among them, Joy's son now.
It's okay now. Maya's okay.
She just has to keep reminding herself of that.
Strawberry Avalanche - Owl City
If you were a beautiful sound in the echoes all around
Then I'd be your harmony
And we'd sing along with the crowds
Beneath the candy coated clouds
She still laughs, thinking about Aaron's family's reaction to their marriage.
Not that they didn't like her, they were just gobsmacked that Aaron got married. He sort of needed to, to be fair, and even though he's got Simon and Clara now, he's never forgotten that their marriage opened a lot of doors for him that would've stayed closed, otherwise.
Anyway, she loves him very much; why wouldn't they get married? He's funny and sweet and smart, and bright in a way not a lot other people are.
He gave her Adam, too.
She's so glad they got married.
You and Me - Plain White T's
You know what I'm going to say before my mouth even makes a sound
And that's why we make a good you and me
I know from the sound of your breathing exactly what you are feeling
This is why we make a good you and me
Joy is pretty sure that she and Lindy aren't in love anymore, not really. They were when they got married-- the memory is rose-tinted and hazy gold, colors of bliss-- but they aren't anymore.
Not that it matters. They still love each other, still know each other better than almost anyone else. They're still parents, of two beautiful little girls. They still talk late into the night, still giggle at the weirdest things, still dance and laugh together.
Romantic love is overrated sometimes, and she wouldn't trade Lindy for anything.
Country Girl (Shake It For Me) - Luke Bryan
Country girl, shake it for me girl,
Shake it for me girl, shake it for me
Country girl, shake it for me girl,
Shake it for me girl, shake it for me
Noah, on the other hand, she never loved him romantically. She married him partly because he's really fucking hot and she wanted him to father her children, and partly because he's legitimately her best friend. He went from a country-boy virgin with fabulous biceps to her favorite person alive in less than two months, and she knew that she wasn't going to let him get away, not after that.
Marriage worked. And now she's got him, and Alexandra and April to boot.
She'll go dancing with him again soon, she thinks.
Pop Princess - The Click Five
Pop princess make me smile
Pop princess drive me wild
Pop princess I need you now
So baby turn your love up loud
She met Chloe through Noah, or actually through his husband Jax, and fell in love pretty much on the spot.
Oh, of course she'd had a massive crush on Chloe's pop star alter ego, but actually meeting Chloe changed that. Where Cherry is smoky-eyed and blatantly sexual, Chloe is sweet and friendly and bubbly. Where Cherry seduces with her voice, Chloe seduces with everything she is. Cherry is darkened bars and smooth whiskey, Chloe is sunny picnics and strawberry ice cream.
Cherry belongs to the audience. Chloe belongs to Joy.
She's happy just at the thought.
Burning Love - Elvis Presley
Ooh, ooh, ooh,
I feel my temperature rising
Help me, I'm flaming
I must be a hundred and nine
She knew Chloe had a husband, but she didn't expect to fall for him too. It's just something about Kurt's goofy smile and big hands, his bone-deep sweetness and rock-hard abs. He's shyer than Chloe, quieter, but get him alone and he blossoms, warm and clever and ruffled sandy hair.
He's so open, his heart and his smile and his hands. How could she possibly keep away from that?
They had a triple wedding, in the end. Made for some interesting pictures.
Are You Gonna Be My Girl? - Jet
I say you look so fine
that I really wanna make you mine....
Big black boots, long brown hair,
She's so sweet with her get back stare.
Amanda is challenging.
She's not a challenge, she is challenging. She lifts her chin, raises her eyebrows, and makes the world quail with nothing more than a long, even stare. Turns Joy on like nothing else.
So does the softness, the kindness Amanda tries to hide with prickles. Her utter loyalty to her siblings, her hopeless caring, the way she tried to blink back tears when she learned Joy had five spouses already.
She wasn't thrilled about being the sixth-- she's Christian, plus monogamous by nature-- but she loves Joy, trusts her enough to do it.
It awes Joy.
Ain't No Other Man - Christina Aguilera
Ain't no other man can stand up next to you
Ain't no other man on the planet does what you do
You're the kinda guy a girl finds in a blue moon
You got soul, you got class, you got style with your bad ass - oh yeah!
Joy is still astonished that Michael was single when she met him.
He waves it off with a laugh, says something about travelling too much, but she really just can't understand it. He's so... he's alive, brilliantly alive, in a way she's never seen in anyone else. She understood monogamy a little, when they first started dating-- she was so possessive.
She's not quite that way anymore-- good, because she has six other spouses and he has two-- but she's still greedy for time with him. Moth to the flame.
She still can't believe nobody got on that.
God is a DJ - Pink
If God is a DJ, life is a dance floor
Love is the rhythm, you are the music
If God is a DJ, life is a dance floor
You get what you're given, it's all how you use it
So this is her life.
She's always liked this song, always liked the idea of life as a dance floor. It certainly is for her. She waltzes with her spouses, bops with her kids, boogies with her parents. Her coworkers are some weird kind of line dance, with stripping. Her friends are a circle dance, hand in hand.
Joy is blessed. She knows that, more and more with every day.
She smiles, and goes on dancing.

I love Joy. I do. And I love this. Everything is amazing, and I love your contrasts with Chloe and Cherry, and how do you make words so awesome.
Love. <3
