Sid's is chain of coffee shops popular in New England (fictional of course) owned by Ashwood native, Sid Malone. Gena is an English luxury brand that Jessica idolizes. Jonathan is Chloe's sometime estranged boyfriend.

“Where are we going?” Jennifer asked Chloe in the backseat.

Chloe looked up from her phone.

“Where are we going, Jess?”

“Where we always go after school,” Jess said from the front seat. “Sid’s.”

Chloe nodded and returned to her phone. She was trying to get into contact with Jonathan, but he wasn’t picking up. She hadn’t seen him since before fifth period.

“Did you say Sid’s?” Jennifer asked.

Jess looked at Jennifer in the rear view mirror. Her brown eyes flashed.

“Yes, do you have a problem with that?”

She stopped at the red light.

“Well I wouldn’t say that exactly. But it’s a little weird for me going to Sid’s when he’s direct competition for Jasmine’s.”

Chloe looked up from her phone. She turned to Jennifer.

“Yeah she might be right, Jess. That would be kind of weird,” Chloe said.

Madison turned in her seat.

“Weird how?” She said a cheery voice.

Chloe clicked her tongue.

Jessica turned down a street. She looked in the mirror again.

“It’ll be fine. I’m sure Mrs. Smith won’t mind. Besides I am dying for a strawberry mocha.”

“Uh it’s Ms. Smith,” Jennifer said. She opened her mouth to say something else, but the car stopped.

“We’re here,” Jessica said reaching for her Gena satchel. Madison opened the door on her side and stepped out and followed Jessica into the coffee shop.

“Chloe, I don’t think this a good idea,” Jennifer said biting her lip.

“Did your mom tell you to not to come to Sid’s?”

“No of course not, but I want to be loyal to her.”

Chloe looked surprised. Although she wanted to please her parents, she never thought about loyalty or anything like that. Of course she had never had any reason to be loyal as her parents were very respected in the Ashwood community.

“We don’t have to go in if you don’t want to,” Chloe said.

Jennifer looked toward the building. The blue and white logo of the Sid fairy was on the front sign. There were a lot of patrons inside. There was a patio connected to right and left side of the store.

“I’ll come. What’s the harm I guess?”

Chloe smiled. She put her phone into her pocket and got out of the car. She waited for Jennifer to emerge and together they walked into the shop.

They stepped inside to the sounds of Simone de Roi on the sound speakers.

“Oh I love her!” Chloe said to Jennifer. She started singing to the song.

“You wanna see me in my kitten heels? Come on boy, take a feel,” Chloe sung to the chorus.

Jennifer giggled. Chloe turned to her.

“Am I entertaining you?” Chloe said in a mock disapproving voice.

“Very,” Jennifer laughed.

Chloe grinned. The person in front of them stepped away.

“What can I get you, miss?” The barista said.

Chloe looked up the menu. She didn’t coffee usually, but she always a white coffee when they came to Sid’s.

“Can I get a white coffee and for my friend,” she turned to Jennifer. “What do you want?”

“I’ll just take a regular cup of coffee.”

“She’ll have that and can you add two chocolate pastries?”

“Coming right up miss.”

He turned to the coffee machine and began making their orders. Chloe turned back to Jennifer.

“So why did you guys move to Ashwood? It’s not the most bustling place in the world.”

Jennifer smiled. “My mom actually grew up in Ashwood. She wasn’t born here, my grandparents came here from California when she was five. But she went to school here until she left to go to university in NYC.”

“I didn’t know your mother grew up here. I wonder if my parents know her.”

Jennifer smiled but didn’t say anything else.

“Your order, miss.”

Chloe took hers and stepped back for Jennifer to get her stuff.

“Where are Jessica and Madison?” Chloe said looking around the crowded coffee shop.

“They might be somewhere outside. Do you want to go look for them?”

“Nah that’s okay,” Chloe said leading Jennifer to a small booth in the back. “It’ll give us time to talk. You have to tell me all about your time in the Big Apple. I’ve only been once.”

Jennifer smiled. “Whatever you want, Miss Parker.”

Heh, I kept waiting for someone to "catch" them going to the competition! Chloe seems a little bit clueless, but Jennifer has a good sense of humor.

That little note about loyalty was really interesting. Will it come up again?
