“Mari!”
“What!” Mari yelled from her room.
“Are you awake? Do you want something for breakfast?”
Mari came out of her room. She stopped by the mirror on the wall and started combing her hair. It had been misbehaving lately and no matter what she did couldn’t control it.
Mari sighed and walked to the kitchen. Her mother was at the espresso machine.
“You want some coffee?” Christina asked.
Mari yawned. She sure needed some kind of jolt to get her through the day.
“You know how I like it,” Mari said going over to the fridge.
Christina nodded and began making the coffee.
Mari took some grapes and began munching on them.
“You need to eat something more fulfilling for breakfast, Mari Carlita,” Christina said disapprovingly.
“I don’t have time, Mom. I need to finish up some schoolwork.”
Christina turned surprised and started to say something, but the phone rang. She picked it up.
“Hello?”
Christina frowned before handing the phone to Mari.
“It’s your Abuela. She wants to tell you something.”
Mari took the phone from her mother.
“Hi Abuela,” Mari said into the phone.
“Hey sweetie, how’s your morning going?” Juana’s soft voice came from the line.
“It could be better,” Mari admitted.
Juana clicked her tongue on the other end.
“I wanted to tell you bebè that I talked to Father Bolìvar and he prayed for you to ace this test!”
“Abuela! Why did you do that? Did he ask why I haven’t been to Mass or anything like that?”
“No sweetie, he knows you are busy, though he hopes you will come and see him soon. I think it’ll be good for you.”
Mari sighed and rubbed her temples. Her grandmother was always trying to get her to go to church more often. She hadn’t been to a Mass in two years.
“I’ll try to come soon, Abuela. I’ll talk to you later okay?”
“Bye bebè, have a good day at school.”
Mari hung up and sighed. Her mother handed her the cup of coffee.
“Thanks Mom, I’m on my way out.”
“Hurry up and finish that homework, Mari Carlita. You should have finished it last night instead of being on the computer.”
Mari sipped her coffee. “In case you didn’t notice, they give us a butt load of homework. I have a paper to write.”
“Sure,” Christina said “I’ll be home from work by five this afternoon. I have overtime.”
“Alright,” Mari said gripping her coffee and pulling her backpack on and adjusting her purse on her shoulder.
She opened the door. She sincerely hoped this day was better than yesterday.
