Laura notices it quite early, the way Grace sits as straight as humanly possible. Laura’s never seen anybody sit that straight before. Grace sits straight, but she also tends to rock back and forth when she thinks no one’s looking. Laura’s heard that rocking is a sign of anxiety and stress; she can’t think of anyone who fits the bill more than Grace.


Laura always makes sure there is a clean chair for Grace during the group meetings. She buys bottled waters and individually packed snacks; Grace won’t drink or eat in front of the group, but Laura buys them anyway. Laura even offers to let Grace keep one of her towels at the shop, though Grace kindly refuses;


“My towel might get dirty if I leave it here. It has to be clean or I can’t sit on it.”


Laura thinks Grace’s problems are too big for the support group to handle. She goes out and buys a washing machine and dryer; Laura puts them in the basement room where the support group meets.


Days later, Grace brings a “backup” towel in an air sealed bag; she leaves it in the basement.

:) Thank you. Yes, the little things (and driers) that these characters do for one another makes me smile. I think they are all so supportive because she's so young and has so much to work through, but she's still sweet and they don't want her to end up like them. Plus, she's Grace.
