Before dawn, Nolani liked to wander down to the ocean, away from the docks where the trading ships came, to where it was dark and solitary. The crashing, overwhelming sense of the ocean near her was just daunting enough to keep her on edge, and the sand between her toes when she took her shoes off felt too smooth for reality.

She came down here because, despite the overpowering ocean and the texture of the sand, when the sun rose and she felt the fires of the world build up around her, she almost felt like she was back home.
